Polynomial Functions Mid-Unit

Assignment
You may choose to complete your mathematical calculations by hand
and scan or take images to upload to the dropbox. To help your teacher
review your work, submit your calculations as a single file document
(preferably as a pdf). If you aren’t sure how to do this, e-mail your
teacher for assistance.

Important
When answering questions in a mathematics course, always use the
following guidelines to help you do your best:

 Provide full solutions, showing all of your steps.

 Make sure that there is one step or idea per line.
 Use one equal sign per line.
 Make sure that equal signs line up vertically.
 Don’t use self-developed short form notations.

Note
Before working on this assignment, wait for feedback on the previous
assessments. In the meantime, review concepts covered in this unit, or
:
begin the next topic.

1. Determine the polynomial degree of each expression clearly justifying

your answer. (1
a. 2x 2 − 2 + 4x 3
b. 7x 3 + (x 2 + 4)(x 2 − 1)
c. −4x 2 (x + 1)(x − 2)(x − 6)
7(5x+9)
d. x(x − 8) − (3x−14)

vertex (0, –4) and passing through the point (1, –3). (5 marks)

4. Determine, through investigation, the equations of the lines that have

a slope of 2 and that intersect the quadratic function f (x) = x (x − 6)
once; twice; never. (15 marks)

squares is a minimum. (6 marks)

6. The following function gives the height h meters, of a batted baseball

as a function of the time, t seconds, since the ball was hit. (2 marks
each)
h(t) = -4.5t 2 + 13.5t + 5.875
a. What is the physical significance of the 5.875 for this situation?
Prove this is true.
b. Determine the following characteristics: axis of symmetry, direction
of opening, t and h-intercepts, vertex, minimum/maximum.  Hint

c. Graph the model with all appropriate labels and restrictions.
d. At what time does the ball hit the ground?
e. What is the geometric significance of the left t-intercept of the
graph? Why does this point have no real physical meaning?
