5.a. Point Slope Form

This document discusses point-slope form of linear equations. Point-slope form gives the slope and a point on the line, allowing equations to be written for any point on the line, not just the y-intercept. Examples are given for writing and graphing equations in point-slope form from given slopes and points. The document also covers writing point-slope form equations from two given points on a line and discusses how horizontal and vertical lines cannot be written in point-slope form since they have undefined or zero slopes.

Point-Slope Form of a Linear Equation

 Today we will be writing and graphing linear equations in point-slope form and using
this form to model and analyze real world linear situations.

Point-Slope Form of a Linear Equation:

This form of a linear equation gives the slope and a point on the line. A major advantage in using this form is it
can be used with ANY point on the line, not just the y-intercept.

Example 1: Example 2:

Writing in Point-Slope Form Given Two Points

Write the equation of the line in Point-Slope Form. You will need to find the slope first, then
choose either point to write the equation in point-slope form.

Review of Horizonal and Vertical Lines

Horizontal and Vertical Lines are NOT able to be written in Point Slope Form.

The equation of a horizontal line is in the form of y = constant. The slope of a horizontal line is ________.

The equation of a vertical line is in the form of x = constant. The slope of a vertical line is _________________
