Answer: The Value of N Is 15. Solution: 18 + 16 + 19 + 15 + 17 85 Then 85 ÷ 5 17

The document contains a student's answers to assessment questions about statistics concepts. The student explains that: 1) The standard deviation is the square root of the variance, which measures the average squared distance from the mean. 2) The mean is not a good measure of central tendency when outliers are present, as outliers can skew the distribution and make it non-normal. 3) Given a data set with values and a target mean, the student can calculate the missing value. The student then shows work for another problem, calculating variances and standard deviations for three data sets with the same mean and range, finding that the variation is different between the sets due to their different compositions.

Answer the following questions and show your solution.

1. What is the relationship between the variance and the standard deviation?

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance, which is defined as
the average of the squares of each value's displacement from the mean. Its
connection is that if we are solving a particular set of numbers and we have
already obtained its variance, we can move ahead to the next step, which is
obtaining the standard deviation. However, if there is no variance, we will be
unable to obtain the standard deviation since the variance would be the only
means of addressing the said standard deviation.

2. Explain why the Mean is not appropriate to measure central tendency when there
are outliers. Give example to support your answer.

Whenever comparison to the majority of the data values, an outlier is a

data value that is exceptionally high or extremely low. According to my
perspective, the explanation why "mean" isn't a good way to measure central
tendency when there are outliers is that it could alter the response when we
outline  the Skewed Distribution. For example, if the data set is "1, 2, 5, 9, 3, 4, 6,
200," the outlier is 1 and 200. If we draw this, we will see that there is no
approximately normal distribution, and the draw will seem like a waveform with a
section where the line might go up or down.

3. 3. Given the following data set, find the value of n to have a mean of 17,
18 16 19 n 17

Answer: The value of n is 15.

Solution: 18 + 16 + 19 + 15 + 17 = 85 then 85 ÷ 5 = 17

Overall answer:
In the question “The three data sets have the same mean and range, but is the
variation the same?” my answer is NO because even though the three data sets have
the same mean and range they have different variations it is because the data sets
have different sets of numbers so that when I computed it results to different variations.
