Quiz 1-Solution

The document is a quiz for a communication systems course. It contains 3 questions that assess understanding of key concepts: 1) The difference between a source encoder and channel encoder is that a source encoder compresses data before transmission by removing redundancy, while a channel encoder adds redundancy to make data more resistant to errors during transmission. 2) Digital systems have replaced analog systems due to advantages like greater accuracy, reliability, flexibility, signal processing capabilities, and storage capacity as well as the ability to detect and correct errors. 3) A channel is a specific frequency used to transmit between devices, bandwidth is the range of frequencies that can be transmitted over a channel, and spectrum is the entire range of frequencies available for wireless communication which

EEE351 Principles of Communication System (BEE8A-BEE8C-EEE6A) Spring 2023

Quiz 01 Version 1&2

Name __________________________________ Reg # ____________________________

CLO1 Describe fundamental components and processes in communication systems. (C2-PLO1)

Answer The following question briefly.

1. What is the difference between source encoder and channel encoder? 3 Pts

A source encoder is used to compress the data before transmission, reducing the
amount of data that needs to be transmitted. It is used to remove redundancy in
the source data and encode it more efficiently.

A channel encoder is used to add redundancy to the data before transmission,

making it more resistant to errors that may occur during transmission. It is used
to protect the data from noise, interference, and other impairments that may
affect the transmission.

2. Why digital systems have taken over their analog counterparts? 3 Pts

Digital systems have become the preferred choice due to several advantages
over analog systems. They offer greater accuracy, reliability, flexibility, signal
processing capabilities, and storage capacity. Digital systems can detect and
correct errors in the data, and their functionality can be changed by
reprogramming the software. They are also more affordable and widely
available. These advantages have led to a significant shift towards digital systems
in many fields.

3. Explain the difference between Channel, Bandwidth and Spectrum. 4 Pts

In wireless communication, channel, bandwidth, and spectrum are related

concepts, but they have different meanings.

A channel is a specific frequency or range of frequencies that is used to transmit

information between wireless devices. It is a physical path or medium through
which the wireless signal travels.

Bandwidth refers to the range of frequencies that can be transmitted over a

channel. It is the difference between the highest and lowest frequencies that can
be transmitted over a channel.

Spectrum refers to the entire range of frequencies that are available for wireless
communication. The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into various frequency
bands that are allocated for different types of wireless communication.

Each channel occupies a specific portion of the spectrum. The spectrum is divided
into many channels, and each channel is allocated a specific frequency or
frequency range.
