HOMEWORK # 2
Note: This HW will not be collected. It should be used as a study guide.

1. An elastomer band which would be utilized in packing purposes has a relaxation time of 40 days at 25oC.
(i) If the initial stress acting on this band is to be 5 MPa, how much time does it take for this band to drop
its stress to 0.5 MPa? (ii) If the activation energy for relaxation is 30 kJ/mole at 25oC, what would be its
relaxation time at 40oC?

2. The tensile stress acting on a polymer band drops half of its value in 100 days. What would be the initial
stress in order for the stress on the bands not to drop under 2 MPa?

3. A stress of 2500 psi is applied to a polymer serving as a fastener in a complex assembly. At a constant
strain, the stress drops to 2400 psi after 100 h. If the stress on the part must remain above 2100 psi in order
for the part to function properly, determine the life of the assembly.

4. Figure–1 shows the mechanical behavior of polypropylene, polyethylene and acetal at two temperatures.
You would like to produce a 30 cm long rod of a polymer that will operate at 40oC for 6 months under a
constant load of 200 kgf. Choose the material and estimate the diameter of the rod such that no more than
5% elongation will occur by creep.

5. A stress of 25 MPa is applied to a 15 cm long rod of borosilicate glass held at a constant temperature. If the
rod is to elongate no more than 0.1 cm in one year, what is the maximum temperature that can be used? The
viscosity of the glass is 108 poise at 1042 K and 104 poise at 1471 K.

6. If a SiC coated boron fiber reinforced Al composite has a volumetric fiber ratio of 40%, calculate (a) the
density, (b) strength and elasticity modulus, (c) parallel, and (d) perpendicular to the loading direction.

7. An epoxy matrix with an elasticity modulus of 4 GPa is to be mixed with glass fibers with an elasticity
modulus of 70 GPa. The fiber volumetric ratio is 40% and all fibers are parallel to each other. Calculate the
strain in a 10 mm diameter rod made of this composite under a tensile load of 50 kN in the direction (a)
parallel to the fibers, (b) perpendicular to the fibers.

8. A micro-laminate, Arall, is produced using 5 sheets of 0.4 mm-thick aluminum and 4 sheets of 0.2 mm
thick epoxy reinforced with unidirectionally aligned Kevlar fibers. The volume fraction of Kevlar fibers in
these intermediate sheets is 55%. Calculate the modulus of elasticity of the micro-laminate parallel and
perpendicular to the unidirectionally aligned Kevlar fibers.
(EEpoxy = 6.9 GPa, EKevlar= 124 GPa, EAl = 70 GPa.)

9. We want to design a composite material for a boat body. The body of the boat is under two-dimensional
stress during operation. The composite material must consist of 70% epoxy as matrix material. The tensile
strength of the composite must be at least 1380 MPa. The tensile strength of the epoxy is 300 MPa.
a) Choose the best fiber material given at the table.
b) We want the composite material nearly as an ISOTROPIC material. How would you design the
composite material?

Aramid 3.62 60 000
Silicon Carbide 1.52 40 000

10. A Ti alloy is used to make a 150 kg part for an unmanned plane.
a) Determine the weight of a substitute part having the same modulus of elasticity parallel to the fibers, if
the part is made of aluminum reinforced with continuous boron fibers.
b) Compare and comment on the specific modulus of the Ti alloy and the substitute composite for his
application.
(ETi=1.5x105 MPa, ρTi=4.41 g/cm3, EAl=0.69x105 MPa, ρAl=2.7 g/cm3, EB=3.8x105MPa, ρB=2.36 g/cm3)
