Assignment 2

The document contains calculations to determine the utilization of an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) with different configurations: 1) For a system with 10 aisles, the utilization is 64.4%, which is lower than expected. 2) For a system with 6 aisles and storage dimensions of 193.65 feet by 64.55 feet, the utilization is 99.3%, which is acceptable but too high. 3) Potential alternatives to improve the design include using 7-9 aisles, equalizing single and dual commands, and operating longer shifts.

a) We have

0.5 L 0.5 H
Tcs = 2Max{ , }+ 2Tpd = 2* 0.5∗150 + 2*0.3 = 1.35 min/cycle
vy vz 200
0. 7 5 L 0. 7 5 H
Tcd = 2Max{ , } + 4Tpd = 2* 0.7 5∗150 + 4*0.3 = 2.325 min/cycle
vy vz 200
RcsTcs + RcdTcd = 60U = 1.35Rcs + 2.325Rcd = 60

Also that: Rcs = 4Rcd

So we get: 1.35*4*Rcd + 2.325*Rcd = 7.725Rcd = 60

 Rcd = 7.767 cycles/hour

Rcs = 4*7.767 = 31.068 cycles/hour

Rt = Rcs + 2Rcd = 31.068 + 2*7.767 = 46.602 transactions/hour/aisle

So for 10 aisles we get: Rt = 10*46.602 = 466.02 transactions/hour/aisle 466

transactions/hour/aisle

We have: Rt = 300/466 = 0.644 = 64.4%

So this utilization is lower than expected

b)

We have:

6L2H2 = 10L1H1 = 10*150*50 = 75000

 L2H2 = 12500 (1)

L 2 L1
Also: = = 150/3 = 3
H2 H1
 L2 = 3H2 (2)

From (1) and (2), we get: 3(H2)2 = 12500

 H2 = 64.55 ft

 L2 = 3*H2 = 3*4166.67 = 193.65 ft

c) We have:

0.5 L 0.5 H
Tcs = 2Max{ , }+ 2Tpd = 2* 0.5∗193.65 + 2*0.3 = 1.246 min/cycle
vy vz 3 00
0.75 L 0.75 H
Tcd = 2Max{ , } + 4Tpd = 2* 0.75∗193.65 + 4*0.3 = 2.168 min/cycle
vy vz 3 00
RcsTcs + RcdTcd = 60U = = 1.246Rcs + 2.168Rcd = 60

We get: 1.246*4*Rcd + 2.168*Rcd = 7.152Rcd = 60

 Rcd = 8.389 cycles/hour

Rcs = 4*8.389 = 33.556 cycles/hour

Rt = Rcs + 2Rcd = 33.556 + 2*8.389 = 50.334 transactions/hour/aisle

With 6 aisles, we have: Rt = 6*50.334 = 302.004 transactions/hour = 302 transactions/hour

So we get: U = 300/302 = 0.993 = 99.3%

This utilization is acceptable but get too high

d)

Other alternatives make to improve the design of the system:

- Inspect the possibility of between 7 to 9 aisles for the better performance

- The single command and dual command should be equal for the improvision of the scheduling
of AS/RS
- Having a longer shift than usual one will result in daily positive change in AS/RS operation
