2. DISTRICT AT A GLANCE:
Warangal Urban, one of the 31 districts of Telangana State is a place with a great
historic past. It is the seat of the Vishnukundins and Kakatiya dynasties that ruled the region as
early as pre-Buddhist period. Originally known as Orugallu – meaning a solitary cliff – Warangal
was the capital of the Kakatiyas who have left their indelible stamp in the form of awe-inspiring
architectural wonders. The Warangal Fort, the Thousand Pillar Temple, and Bhadrakali temple
are fine remnants of the glorious bygone era. After the downfall of the Kakatiyas, the region was
ruled by the Qutub Shahis, and the Nizam.
