• Identify the use of initials y and w
1.Initial + final + tone : shì (是 is, are)

2.Initial + final : ma (吗 question particle)

3.Final + tone : ó (哦 interjection)

4.Final : a (啊 particle)

• When there is no initial consonant before the
finals with i and ü, then y should be used.

• When there is no initial consonant before final


u, then w should be used.
1. Put y before i if the latter is the only vowel.

2. Change i to y if the former comes before other


vowels in a syllable.

3. Put y before ü and two dot above the ü should be
omitted.

4. Put w before u if the latter is the only vowel in the

vowel.

When the group ü finals combine with j, q, x, y, the


two dots on the tops should be omitted.
However, while the group ü finals are preceded by initials
l and n, the two dots on the top remain as

l+ü=lü l+üe=lüe n+ü=nü n+üe=nüe


WHERE TO PUT A TONE MARK?
 The tone marks should be written above the finals.
 When the final is a compound final, the tone mark is
written according to the following order:

a o e i u ü
Guideline
1. Give priority to a: bǎi
2. Go for o if without a: duó
3. Go for e if without a and o: gěi
4. Put it above the latter if i and u or u and i go together:
shuí, jiǔ
5. When the tone mark is written above “i”, the dot
above “i” should be omitted: guī, guí, guǐ, guì
Put a tone mark on the correct vowel.
