Multi-Level Mental Models Cheat Sheet

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a
judgement. And having the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking.
Being a critical thinker also enables you to engage in thoughtful disagreement rather
than arguments. It’s not about disagreeing, it’s about critical analysing and thinking
about it - before accepting it as a reality.

The 5 W’s

Who? Translates as: “What is the identity of the person involved?”

What? Translates as: “What is the identity of the subject, concept, or topic involved?”
Where? Translates as: “What is the identity of the location or place?”
When? Translates as: “What is the identity of the time?”
Why? Translates as: “What is the identity of the cause?”
How? Translates as: “What is the identity of the means or process?”

First-principles questioning:

● Clarifying your thinking and explaining the origins of your ideas (Why do I
think this? What exactly do I think?)

● Challenging assumptions (How do I know this is true? What if I thought the

opposite?)

● Looking for evidence (How can I back this up? What are the sources?)

● Considering alternative perspectives (What might others think? How do I

know I am correct?)

● Examining consequences and implications (What if I am wrong? What are the

consequences if I am?)

● Questioning the original questions (Why did I think that? Was I correct? What
conclusions can I draw from the reasoning process?)

Applying Multi-Level Mental Models

1. Identify the fundamental components.

2. Practice those components over and over until you have mastery.
3. Learn to seamlessly combine components together until it's automatic.
4. Learn to use the mental models in ALL of the areas of your life

It takes a lot of work over a long period of time to master anything. If you look at any top
performer in any field, you will see they apply a set of models and principles in order to
reach the summit of their chosen field.

I encourage you to reflect over this training and worksheet often to really weave it like a
fabric throughout all areas of your life.
