Fire

Fire is combustion or burning that combines a substance chemically with oxygen, giving off light, heat, and smoke. A fire extinguisher is a portable device that discharges water, foam, gas, or other material to extinguish small fires. There are five classes of fires - Class A for ordinary combustibles, Class B for flammable liquids, Class C for electrical equipment, Class D for combustible metals, and Class K for cooking fires. When using a fire extinguisher, one should select the correct type for the fire, stand 6-8 feet away, and follow the PASS method of pulling the pin, aiming at the base of the fire, squeezing the handle, and sweeping side to side

Fire – combustion or burning in which substance combine chemically with oxygen from the air and

typically give out bright light, heat and smoke.

Fire extinguisher – a portable device that discharges a jet of water, foam, gas or other material to
extinguish a fire

- Portable or movable apparatus used to put out a small fire by direction onto it a
substance that cools the burning material, deprives the flame of oxygen, or
interferes with the chemical reactions occurring in the flame.
- Is a handheld active fire protection device usually filled with a dry or wet chemical
used to extinguish or control small fries.

Fire Extinguisher Types

Class of Fire Description

1. Class A Fires Fires in ordinary combustible material such as
“use on wood, paper, textiles and rubbish” wood, cloth, paper, rubber and many plastics
2. Class B Fires Fires in flammable liquids or flammable
“use on flammable liquids” gases, petroleum, grease, tars, oils, oil based
paints, solvent, lacquers or alcohol
3. Class C Fires Fires involve electrical equipment such as
“use on electrical equipment” appliances, wiring, circuit, breakers and
outlets

Never use water to extinguish class C fires –

the risk of electrical shock is far to great, class
C extinguishers do not have a numerical
rating, the C classification means the
extinguishers agent is non- conductive
4. Class D Fires Fires involving combustible metals such as
“use on combustible metal” magnesium, sodium, potassium, titanium,
and aluminum, special dry powder,
extinguishing agents are required for the
class of fire and must be tailored to the
specific hazardous metal
5. Class K fires Fires involving commercial cooking appliance
“use in combustible cooking media” with vegetable oils, animal oils or fat oil, high
temperatures. A wet potassium acetate law
ph-based agent is used for this class of fire.

STEPS ON THE PROPER USE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

1. Be sure that the correct fire extinguisher will be used to the 5 types of fires
a. Ordinary Combustible
b. Flammable Liquids
c. Electrical Fires
d. Flammable metals
e. Combustible cooking media
2. Observe the 6-8 feet distance from the fire
3. PASS method

Pull the Pin

Aim at base of fire
Squeeze the Handle
Sweep side to side
