Expand Function in Legendre Polynomials On The Interval - 11 - Mathematics Stack Exchange

The document discusses expanding the function f(x) = |x| in Legendre polynomials on the interval [-1,1]. It states that the Legendre polynomials form an orthogonal basis. The expansion takes the form of a Fourier-Legendre series with coefficients Cn calculated using the inner product of f(x) and the Legendre polynomials Pn(x). Due to the evenness of |x|, only the coefficients of the even terms are non-zero, and formulas are provided to calculate these coefficients.

Expand function in Legendre polynomials on the interval [-1,1]

Expand the following function in Legendre polynomials on the interval [-1,1] :

1
f (x) = |x|

The Legendre polynomials p n (x) are defined by the formula :

n
1 d 2 2
pn (x) = (x − 1)
n n
2 n! dx

for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, . . .

My attempt :

we have using the fact that |x| is an even function.

2
a0 =
π

1
2
an = ∫ x cos(nx) dx
π −1

Then what is the next step ?

You have edited this, removed your original question and turned it in to a brand new question. This doesn't
work well with existing answers to your original question. It would be better to add an entirely new question. –

f (x) = ∑ an P n (x)

n=0

See for example here for more information.

Another very useful reference (in general) is Abramowitz and Stegun's Handbook of Mathematical
Functions where you will find chapters on Legendre functions and orthogonal polynomials.

We know that the Fourier-Legendre series is like

0 f (x) = ∑ Cn P n (x)

n=0

where
1
2n + 1
Cn = ∫ f (x)P n (x) dx
2 −1

So now we are going to calculate the result of

1
2n + 1
∫ |x|P n (x) dx
2 −1

As |x| is an even function, and the parity of P n (x) depends on the parity of n, We can write
1

∫ |x|P n (x) dx
−1

as
1

∫ |x|P 2k (x) dx  k = 0, 1, 2...

−1

and
1

∫ |x|P 2k (x) dx
−1

0 1

= ∫ −xP 2k (x) dx + ∫ xP 2k (x) dx

−1 0

= 2∫ xP 2k (x) dx
0

we get
1

2∫ xP 2k (x) dx
0

1 1
2k + 1 2k
= 2( ∫ P 2k+1 (x) dx + ∫ P 2k−1 (x) dx)
4k + 1 0
4k + 1 0

As

1 0 n = 2k
k
∫ P n (x) dx = { (−1) (2k−1)!!

0
n = 2k + 1
(2k+2)!!

We get
k k−1
(−1) (2k − 1)!! (−1) (2k − 3)!!
C2k = (2k + 1) + n
(2k + 2)!! (2k)!!

1
⎧ k = 0
2
= ⎨ (−1)
k+1
(4k+1) (2k−2)!
⎩ k > 0
2k
2 (k−1)! (k+1)!

So
∞ k+1
1 (−1) (4k + 1) (2k − 2)!
|x| = + ∑ P 2k (x)
2k
2 2 (k − 1)! (k + 1)!
k=1
