READING BEYOND THE LINES
Activity Page
COMMENCEMENT
OPENING PRAYER
Grant me O Lord, my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you and wisdom to find you,
To act justly, to love and to walk humbly with our God.
Twin Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Reign in our hearts forever.
OVERVIEW
Critical reading precedes critical thinking because through reading, one becomes more critical
in analysing a particular phenomenon. Being critical means being logical so whatever a reader would
take in, it can be understood with reason. From the knowledge of context development, hypertext and
intertext can be the vehicles or media to understand a particular text. This is not just getting the
explicit or implicit meanings of texts, but also understanding the reason or justification why this text
exists for the readers to comprehend. Hence, critical thinking is not only “reading between the lines,”
but also “reading beyond the lines.”
CONTENT STANDARD
The learner understands the relationship of a written text and the context in which it was
developed.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner writes a 1000-word critique of a selected text on the basis of its claim/s, context,
and properties as a written material.
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES
Explain critical reading as a form of reasoning
Formulate evaluative statements about a text read:
a. assertions about the content and properties of a text read; and
b. counterclaims in response to claims made in a text read
Determine textual evidence to validate assertions and counterclaims made about a text read
FORMATION STANDARD
The learner shall be just in various issues and concerns as he critically reads assertions,
claims/counterclaims, and textual evidences in whichever text he read.

RIDDLE ME THIS
Let’s test your critical reading skills. Answer the question posted after each
situation. Also write your reason for your answer. (Please don’t search Google. Answer
honestly.)
1. Samuel was out for a walk when it started to rain. He did not have an umbrella
and he wasn’t wearing a hat. His clothes were soaked, yet not a single hair on
his head got wet. How could this happen?
2. Two fathers and two sons went fishing one day. They were there the whole day
and only caught 3 fish. One father said, that is enough for all of us, we will have
one each. How can this be possible?
3. A bus driver was heading a street in Buendia. He went right past a stop sign
without stopping, he turned left where there was “no left turn” sign, and he went
the wrong way on a one-way street. Then he went on the left side of the road
past a police car. Still, he didn’t break any traffic laws. Why not?
4. A man in a car saw a Golden Door, Silver Door, and a Bronze Door. What door
did he open first?
5. A man and his son are in a car accident. The father dies on the scene, but the
child is rushed to the hospital. When he arrives, the surgeon says, “I can’t
operate on this boy, he is my son!” How can this be?

ACQUISITION
ACTIVITY TITLE: Kinds of Logical Reasoning
LEARNING TARGET: I can identify the kind of logical reasoning used in statements.
REFERENCE: Anacay, M. E. and Rivera, M. X. (2016). Critical Reading and
Writing Skills for the 21st Century. Quezon City: The Inteligente
Publishing, Inc. pp. 102-103. Print.
Concept Digest:
There will always be something that you might want to do or accomplish in
pursuit of knowledge. At times, you would like to find out if the new pair of clothes you
bought would go better with dark shoes or with a light pair. In another time, you might
want to prove who is the better poet between Langford Hughes and Edgar Allan Poe.
You can execute this, not by random and disjointed thoughts, but by an impressive
organization of thoughts and well-placed ideas and concepts of what you have read.
You need to consider as well who you are talking to, as well as the issue at hand, so
that you can pick the most likely way on how to go about the whole logical process.
The following are the different kinds of reasoning that you can make use of in
your daily conversations.
1. Inductive reasoning. The logic used here is from specific to general, which is
utilized primarily in science. The evidence is synonymous to the use of this kind
of reasoning. Adding evidences makes the resulting information more reliable.
2. Deductive reasoning. This is the logic used from general to specific, utilized
primarily in math and philosophy. This kind of reasoning prevents us from
committing mistakes because there are boundaries where we can base our
inferences on. Like in business writing, it has a set of conventions that needs to
be followed. This kind of reasoning also relies on making inferences based solely
on earlier statements.
3. Abductive reasoning. Multiple choices are available here, which are used in
formulating hypothesis. In abductive reasoning, there are many choices but there
is only one plausible explanation.
For students like you, honing your mental abilities begins with your choice of
reading materials. What does your choice of what to read do to your reasoning ability?
Learning Activity 1
Directions: Identify the kind of reasoning are used in the following statements.
Write your answers in the spaces provided before each number.
______________1. There is no chance of rain today, so wear loose clothing and put
on sunblock cream.
______________2. The Philippines’ chance of becoming carbon neutral, just like
Bhutan and the Vatican City, is possible if the concerned
government agency will first look into small areas, like barangays,
to check its carbon level.
______________3. Your mother can only bear with you because you are her child.
______________4. Dictatorship in the Philippines ended when a leadership was
questioned even by its loyal followers during EDSA Revolution.
______________5. They believe that the problem on eliminating rats can be solved by
removing all sources of food within the distance of 100 meters.

ACTIVITY TITLE: Assertions
LEARNING TARGET: I can classify statements of assertion based on their types.
REFERENCE: Rodriguez, M. A. and Tiongson, M. C. (2016). Reading and
Writing Skills. Manila City: Rex Publishing. pp. 23-24. Print.
Concept Digest:
Becoming a good critical reader means that you are able to logically evaluate the
claims of the writer. Any writer would want the reader to consider—and possibly agree
with—the claims that he or she puts forward. In expository writing, assertions become
the primary channel for a reader to assent to a claim.
Assertions are declarative sentences that claim something is true about
something else. Simply put, it is a sentence that is either true or false.
There are four common types of assertion, which are classified according to the
degree of certainty they can be judged as true or false namely: fact, convention,
opinion, and preference.
Learn more about these assertions by reading their meanings and examples in
the attachment provided.
Learning Activity 2
Directions: Classify the following assertions as statements of fact, convention,
opinion, or preference. Write your answers in the spaces before each number.

Concept Digest:
To be an effective critical thinker, it is not enough just to be able to identify claims
and assertions. The ability to analyze an argument is essential to understanding the
text more deeply, but understanding the claim is not the only facet of the argument.
You must also learn how to analyze the counterclaims and evidence provided by the
text.
Being able to recognize and formulate counterclaims in reaction to an argument
is a characteristic of a good critical reader. Counterclaims are claims made to rebut a
previous claim. They provide a contrasting perspective to the main argument.
By being able to locate and provide counterclaims to an argument, you show a
deep competence and familiarity with the writer's topic. It shows that you are examining
different perspectives and not just passively accepting the writer's claim. It shows that
you have thoroughly considered the topic, and are willing to engage different
viewpoints from your own, thus remaining objective. It also helps you clarify what your
personal position is on the topic.
The following questions will help you formulate a counterclaim:
What are the major points on which you and the author can disagree?
What is their strongest argument? What did they say to defend their position?
What are the merits of their view?
What are the weaknesses or shortcomings in their argument?
Are there any hidden assumptions?
Which lines from the text best support the counterclaim you have formulated?
Learning Activity 3
Directions: Below are examples of claims. Show your different viewpoints by
writing your counterclaims. Write your answers on the space provided. Each item is
worth five points.
1. Claim: Staying at home during the quarantine period will help in decreasing

Concept Digest:
To better evaluate the author's argument, you should be able to determine the
evidence from the text. This will allow you to validate the assertions of the author and
your own counterclaims as a response to reading. Evidence is defined as the details
given by the author to support his/her claim. The evidence provided by the writer
substantiates the text. It reveals and builds on the position of the writer and makes the
reading more interesting. Evidence is crucial in swaying the reader to your side. A jury
or judge, for example, relies on evidence presented by a lawyer before it makes a
decision regarding a case.
Read the attachment provided to understand more about evidences.
Learning Activity 4
Directions: Below are some claims taken from President Quezon’s speech. Go
back to the text and search for two examples from the text which support the claim.
Evaluate the evidence provided using the criteria previously mentioned. Afterwards,
give your own piece of evidence to better support the claim. Provide a one-sentence
explanation of why you chose to give that example, or how it would make the claim
stronger.
If we compare our individual and civic traits with those that adorned our
forefathers, we will find, I fear, that we, the Filipinos of today, have lost much of the
moral strength and power for growth of our ancestors.

SYNTHESIS
ACTIVITY TITLE: Writing a Good Review
LEARNING TARGET: I can write a critique on a social media post based on its claims,
contexts, and evidences.
Concept Digest:
Social media was created as a way for people to connect with old friends and
extended family, as well as to make instantaneous connection, find new trends
and hobbies, and stay up to date on current issues and events. Today, social media
became more important than ever before.
Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram give other people access on
what a person has been up to lately. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that posting
personal opinions and information on these sites can lead to unwanted hate or
humiliation from followers or peers.
While arguments may create a very negative perspective, facing the need to
argue reminds us of what is important for us, from our core values and/or our goals.
Arguments also give us the opportunity to think and voice how we feel about certain
issues or concerns. Although, you need to be careful with your counterclaims and
arguments. Chances are, you may end up engaging in one of them at some point.
Learning Activity 5
Directions: With everything going on around the world lately, I am sure you have
come across a social media post that triggered your rage because the post is in
opposition of what you know, what you believe in, or the truth. Write a 1000-word
critique on that post. Remember that a good review will identify the claim of the text,
describe its context, and evaluate the evidence provided.
Format: Printed | Long Bond Paper | Spacing: single-spaced | Font: Times New
Roman | Font size: 12 points | Margins: 1 inch on all sides.
Provide a photo of the post you are reviewing and follow the given format. You
will also be graded based on the following.
