Lesson 9:
Mathematics as A Tool
(Statistics)
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Define basic statistical terms
2. Differentiate between descriptive and inferential statistics
3. Classify variables and measurement scales

II. CONCEPT NOTES

Why is it important to study statistics:
1 as a student?
2. as future professional?

To learn more, read and write the following concepts in your Gapan Notebook. /note book

Basic Concepts and Definitions

Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, organization,

presentation, analysis and interpretation of data. It is a methodology employed to
make sense of numbers. Statistics can be used for making decisions when someone
is faced with uncertainties. There are two major fields of statistics, descriptive and
inferential statistics.

Week 2: Mathematics in the Modern World
Important terms

Population- complete set of people, animals, places, things or organizations being

studied
Population sizes is denoted by”N”

Sample – a subset of population. Sample size denoted by “n”

Parameter – a number that describes a characteristics of a population like

Population mean, population variance and population standard deviation.

Statistic - a number that describes a characteristic of a sample like

Sample mean, sample variance and sample standard deviation.

Variable – a numerical characteristic or an attribute associated with the

population being studied.

Week 2: Mathematics in the Modern World
Two types of Variable
a. Categorical or Qualitative
b. Numerical or Quantitative
 Discrete------- counting
 Continuous – measuring

Scales of Measurements
A. Nominal Scale- classifies variables into two or more categories or classes.
Ex. Religion and Gender

B. Ordinal – ranks individual in terms of the degree/level to which they possess a

characteristic. Ex anxiety level ( high, average, low).

C. Interval Scale – order score from highest to lowest and established uniform unit
in scale so that any distance between two consecutive score is equal.

Week 2: Mathematics in the Modern World
Ex. The distance between 10 and 20 is same as the distance between 50 and 60
D. Ratio Scale – differs from the interval scale in its zero point is not arbitrary but
indicates total absence of property measured Ex. Height and weight

Activity 1.Field of Statistics

A. Descriptive Statistics – with the collection and presentation of data and summarizing values that
describe the group.

Ex. A study on the average number of patient arrivals per day

B. Inferential Statistics – deal with the interferences and prediction made based on the analysis and
interpretation of the result.

Ex. A study on determining the relationship between grades and place where a student live.

Direction : Decides whether descriptive or inferential statistics would be used in each of the following
situations
1. A tire dealer wishes to estimate the average life of a tire.
2. A politician wishes to know the exact number of vote cast for his opponent in the last election.
3. A banker wishes to know the average income of all teachers of Gapan City College in 2022.
4. A medical researcher wants to test an anti-cancer drug that may have harmful side effects.
5. A sports writer wishes to list the winning times in all swimming events in the 2022 SeaGames.

Activity 2 types of Variables

Categorical/Qualitative Variables are variables that place individuals into categories and cannot be
quantified in the meaningful way. Ex gender, eye color, blood type.

Numerical/Quantitative Variables are variables where exact numerical values are expected.
Ex. Height , weight, age, number of students, salary of teachers

Direction: identify the type of variable in each column as qualitative or quantitative.

1. Civil status
2. Nationality
3. Religion
4. Number of dependents
5. Age
6. Degree Earned
7. Sex
8. Job applying For

Week 2: Mathematics in the Modern World
Activity 3 Classifying Quantitative Variables
Direction: tell whether each observation is discreet or continuous. Write D id discrete and C if
continuous.

1. the number of students with long hair is 52.

2. The boy’s weight is 136 pounds.
3. The highest grade in a statistics class is 1.25
4. The student’s IQ score is 136
5. The number of passenger in a bus is 34
6. The number of children per family is 4
7. The number of female criminology students in GCC is 2469
8. The number of students who failed in CE03 is 19
9. The length of the rope is 164 cm
10. The average weight of teenagers in a village is 120lbs.

IV. REFLECTION:
Let's wrap up the module exercises this time by responding to the following questions about
your learning experience.

1. Did you have challenges in today’s learning? How did you overcome those challenges?
