Chapter - 12 Length (Part-2) : Will Be Discussed in Class and Will Be Done in The Reader

1. The document discusses addition, subtraction and word problems involving length. 2. Examples are provided to add and subtract lengths expressed in meters (m) and centimeters (cm) or kilometers (km) and meters (m). Lengths are arranged in columns and added or subtracted separately. 3. Word problems apply the concepts of addition and subtraction of lengths to solve real-world problems. One example calculates the length of cloth needed for making trousers and a shirt. Another finds the height of a building given the total height with a flagstaff and the height of just the flagstaff.

Chapter – 12 Length (Part-2)

Addition of Lengths
To add the given lengths , we arrange them in two columns of ‘m’ and
‘cm’ or ‘km’ and ‘m’ and then add then.
Ex – 12 B
1. Add the following
a–l
Will be discussed in class and will be done in the reader

2. Arrange in columns and add

a) 107 m 65 cm and 80 m 45 cm

m cm
107 65
+ 80 45

Subtraction of Lengths
To subtract we arrange the given lengths in columns of ‘m’ and ‘cm’
or ‘km’ and ‘m’ and then subtract separately.
Ex – 12 C
1. Subtract the following
a–l
Will be discussed in class and will be done in the reader

Word Problems
Example 1 :-
From a roll of electric cable 80 m long , a piece of length 37 m 5 cm
is used . How much cable is left in the roll ?

Solution :- Total length of cable = 80 m

Length of cable used = 37 m 5 cm
Remaining Length = 80 m – 37 m 5 cm
= 42 m 95 cm .
m cm
8 0 0 0
_ 3 7 0 5

42 9 5

Example 2 :-
How much is 19 m 83 cm less than 50 m ?

Solution :- The required difference = 50 m – 19 m 83 cm

m cm
50 0 0
- 1 9 8 3

3 0 1 7
_____________________________________
Hence 19 m 83 cm is 30 m 17 cm less than 50 m.
Ex – 12 D
1. A tailor needs 1m 75cm of cloth for a pair of trouser and 2m
35cm for a shirt. What total length of cloth does he need?
Length of the cloth for trouser = 1m 75cm
Length of the cloth for shirt = 2m 35cm
Total length = 4m 10cm
m cm
1 75
+ 2 35

2. A building with a flagstaff has the length of 19m 75cm. If the
height of flagstaff is 5m 15cm, find the height of the building?
Total height of the building with flagstaff = 19m 75 cm
Height of flagstaff = 5m 15cm
Height of the building = 14m 60cm
m cm
