prewrite

The goal of an informative essay is to educate the reader on a topic. The writer
examines a topic and explains important ideas and information. The writer might
define a term or concept, compare and contrast two things, or explain cause-and-
effect relationships.

A successful informative essay has the following characteristics:

 an introduction that presents a topic

 a clear thesis statement summarizing the writer’s central idea

 an organizational structure that develops the thesis
 facts, definitions, concrete details, and other information relevant to the
topic
 transitions to link major sections of text
 precise language and a formal style
 a conclusion that supports the information presented

A plan is an outline where you write out what you want to say in your essay. One
way to plan your essay is by creating an outline.

Your plan is not the final draft, so it does not need to be perfect. Writers make
changes to their work throughout the writing process, so do not feel worried
about making everything perfect at this point. You will have many opportunities to
make changes to your plan.

When making your plan, try not to focus on spelling, grammar, formal style, or
even writing in complete sentences. You will have time to work out these details
later.

As you work on your plan, focus on the essential elements of an informative

essay:
 a thesis statement that makes your central idea clear to your reader

 an organizational structure that effectively presents information to your

reader
 relevant evidence to develop your topic
 explanations of the evidence to help the reader understand your central
idea
You have an outline of your informative essay. Now you are ready to write a
draft. Drafting is the process of turning your ideas into the first version of your
completed work. In this case, you will take your outline and turn it into an
informative essay.

When writing your draft, try not to focus on spelling, grammar, punctuation, or
getting your sentences exactly right. You will have time to work out these details
later.

As you work on your draft, focus on:

 turning the ideas from your outline into complete sentences and
paragraphs
 writing with a formal style and tone
 making your draft readable so your peers and teacher can give you good
feedback

You have a draft of your essay. Now you are ready to revise. Revising is when
you reread your draft with a critical perspective and ask yourself how it can be
improved to more effectively educate your reader on your topic. You might add
information to a body paragraph, change your organizational structure, or
remove, add, or rewrite a section of your draft to better communicate your central
idea.

When revising your draft, try not to focus on spelling, punctuation, or wording
your sentences perfectly. You will get a chance to polish and perfect the smaller
issues in your essay later when you edit.

As you revise, focus on:

 introducing your topic in a clear and engaging way

 thoroughly developing your central idea with relevant evidence

 organizing your ideas in a logical structure
 clarifying the relationships between your ideas
 removing unnecessary or repetitive sections of your essay
 providing a conclusion that effectively supports your central idea
Now, it is time to edit your informative essay. Editing involves focusing on the
style and mechanics of your writing, paying close attention to word choice,
spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Small changes can have a big impact on the
reader. For example, rewording a confusing sentence can better inform your
reader of your central idea. Mistakes in spelling or punctuation cause confusion
for readers, so finding and fixing these mistakes will help your reader understand
your central idea.

When editing your essay, try not to make extensive changes.

As you edit, focus on:

 rewording confusing sentences so they are easier to understand

 proofreading for spelling, punctuation, and grammar

 replacing vague words with precise words
 maintaining a formal style

Remember, editing is a time for final touches. Rereading your draft multiple
times, even reading the sections out of order, can help you find and correct
mechanical errors.
