Writing Grade 8
The goal of an informative essay is to educate the reader on a topic. The writer
examines a topic and explains important ideas and information. The writer might
define a term or concept, compare and contrast two things, or explain cause-and-
effect relationships.
A plan is an outline where you write out what you want to say in your essay. One
way to plan your essay is by creating an outline.
Your plan is not the final draft, so it does not need to be perfect. Writers make
changes to their work throughout the writing process, so do not feel worried
about making everything perfect at this point. You will have many opportunities to
make changes to your plan.
When making your plan, try not to focus on spelling, grammar, formal style, or
even writing in complete sentences. You will have time to work out these details
later.
When writing your draft, try not to focus on spelling, grammar, punctuation, or
getting your sentences exactly right. You will have time to work out these details
later.
You have a draft of your essay. Now you are ready to revise. Revising is when
you reread your draft with a critical perspective and ask yourself how it can be
improved to more effectively educate your reader on your topic. You might add
information to a body paragraph, change your organizational structure, or
remove, add, or rewrite a section of your draft to better communicate your central
idea.
When revising your draft, try not to focus on spelling, punctuation, or wording
your sentences perfectly. You will get a chance to polish and perfect the smaller
issues in your essay later when you edit.
Remember, editing is a time for final touches. Rereading your draft multiple
times, even reading the sections out of order, can help you find and correct
mechanical errors.
