these rules for our class to go smoothly today.

ENGAGE Yes, Ma’am.

Okay students, before we start our lesson for

today, we are going to have an activity called issues in
pictures. I will show various pictures that depict
different issues or problems in society and your job is to
find out what the images depict according to the letter
clues that I’ve given in connection with the photos. You
will be grouped into four and the first group to pass
their paper will be given reserve points which they may
use for the quiz later on. Is everybody ready?

First Issue
Yes, Ma’am.
(Students answer, Food Insecurity.)
Second Issue

(Students answer, Stealing.)

(Students answer, Bullying)

Okay, so the first one to pass their paper was group 1!
Congratulations, members of the group, you are given 3
points to add to your quiz later on.

Yes! Thank you, Ma’am!

EXPLORE

At this point, class, I will be telling you a story.

Everyone loves stories, right? May it be reading,
watching a movie, or even the stories told in between
the lines of the songs we sing, we enjoy a good
narrative. But before anything else, let’s get to know the
author of the story I will be telling you about today.
Class, please read the author’s information.

Cevdet Kudret was a poet and writer. He was

born on the 2nd of February 1907, in Istanbul,
and died 10th of July 1991. His surname was
Solok but wrote under the pen name Cevdet
Kudret.
Alright, now that you know about the author let’s
proceed with the story. Are you ready?

Yes, Ma’am.
Okay, class, so the story begins with the tragic and
unfortunate death of Dursun Agha, leaving behind his
wife, Gulnaz, and their two little children. Dursun Agha
was the breadwinner of his family and so without him,
the family struggles to survive. So class, with the death
of the breadwinner, what do you think might happen to
the wife and children Dursun Agha left behind?

• They might have a difficult time

adjusting.
• They won’t be able to buy food,
Ma’am.
• No one will make a living for them,
anymore.
That’s right, and that’s exactly what happened to the
family Dursun Agha left behind when he died. The first
few days, the family Dursun Agha left behind was able
to survive because it is traditional for the neighbors to
give food to the house where death has occurred. The
first and most generous tray of food came from the
white house and other neighbors took care of their food
for the next three or four days. Although the death of
the father of their family died, the mother thought that
they might be able to carry their grief for the rest of
their lives if only they had such provisions daily. But the
food stopped coming after three or four days and the
family had to eat what was left of the food they had at
home. Eventually, even that ran out after 2 or three
days. So, students, what do you think might happen
next?
• They might starve, Ma’am.
• The children might become
malnourished.
• The mother might feel distressed.
• The children might start to cry
because pf hunger.

That’s right, students! Two days went by and the

children as well as Gulnaz started to feel very hungry.
She wanted to ask for food from the white house but
failed because she lost her courage. She then decided to
send the elder boy to the grocer to ask for some food on
credit but when the grocer found out the boy had no
money, he sent the boy home. How do you feel about
the grocer who sent the hungry little boy home?
• He was wrong to do that, Ma’am. He
could have given the boy some old
bread.
• He could have given the boy a chance
to borrow food on credit Ma’am
seeing that the boy was starving.
• He seemed heartless Ma’am because
he did not show any sympathy for the
starving boy.

I feel the same way. The grocer could have at least

helped the starving boy get something in his stomach
even if it’s just a piece of bread. Alright, let’s continue
with the story. After being sent home, the little boy
slowly went home in great distress. Already weak from
hunger and going out in the cold in thin clothes, the
older boy fell ill and was on the brink of death. Unable
to fall asleep from hunger the little boy asks his mother
if his brother will die. In shock, the mother replied,
“Why would you ask that?” Can you guess what the
younger brother replied to his mother next?

• He’s worried that his brother might,

die, Ma’am.
• He doesn’t want his brother to die
just like his father, Ma’am.
Those are some really great guesses. Alright, let’s find • He doesn’t understand what was

Alright, students, are you shocked? How did you feel “Because then, food will come from the white

• It really shows how difficult life might

have seemed for the little brother.
• The little brother must have felt very
hungry and it’s such a sad ending.
• The ending was pretty shocking but
understandable because the brother
must have been starving and he’s too
Okay, so to measure how much you understood the young to completely understand the
story, I want you to answer some of these questions. concept of death.
The first question is, who were the main characters of
the story, and can you describe at least one of them.

• Dursun Agha: the breadwinner of the

family.
• Gulnaz: The mother of the two little
boys and wife of Dursun Agha who
became a widow at the start of the
story.
• The grocer: The man who refuses to
lend food to the starving boy.
• The older boy: Starving but still

why the neighbors sent food to the family for a few days
after Dursun Agha died?
That’s right. In the context of the story which was set in
Istanbul, it is part of their culture to help those who
have recently lost a loved one. Okay, so can anyone tell
me what happened to the family when the neighbors • It is their tradition Ma’am.

Thank you. So from what you’ve mentioned a while ago

could be social, moral, or economic issue.

That’s right! And these problems can actually be

classified into three categories. The first is called Social
Issue. Class, please read.
• To help solve the problems.
• To help those in need.
• To find solutions to the issues.

Social Issues prevent society from functioning

at the most desirable level.
An issue becomes a social issue when:

An issue becomes a moral issue when: to survive.
• It is against the value, beliefs, and preferences
of people in society.
• It involves behavior patterns that bring the
individual into conflict with society.
• It involves actions that have the potential to
harm others or themselves.
An example of this is the death penalty. Although the
death penalty is legal in some countries, in the context
of the Philippines which is a Christian nation, a great
number of people are against it including the church.
Can you think of other moral issues that can be found in
the story, class.

That’s correct, class! Finally, the third common type of

issue is called an Economic Issue. Class, please read.

children were starving and dying,

• Involves not having a job to earn a

c. Review

Before we proceed with the next activity, let’s have a

quick review of your understanding first.

What is an issue class?

• It is a problem within society, Ma’am.
Very good. • These are problems that affect the
people, Ma’am.
