Assignment 1

Problem 1
A small projectile is fired vertically downward into a fluid medium with an
initial velocity of 60 m/s. Due to the drag resistance of the fluid the
projectile experiences a deceleration of a = (-0.4v3) m/s2, where v is in
m/s. Determine the projectile’s velocity and position 4 s after it is fired
Solution
Velocity

Problem 2
A particle moves along a horizontal path with a velocity of v = (3t2 - 6t)
m/s, where t is the time in seconds. If it is initially located at the origin O,
determine the distance traveled in 3.5 s, and the particle’s average
velocity and average speed during the time interval.
Solution 𝑠 𝑡
2
𝑣(𝑡) = 3𝑡 − 6𝑡 𝑚/𝑠 𝑣(𝑡) = 𝑑𝑠/𝑑𝑡 ‫׬‬0 𝑑𝑠 = ‫׬‬0 𝑣 𝑡 𝑑𝑡
𝑡 3 2
𝑠 𝑡 = ‫׬‬0 3𝑡 2 − 6𝑡 𝑑𝑡 = 3𝑡 ൗ3 − 6𝑡 ൗ2 = (𝑡 3 − 3𝑡 2 ) m
To Calculate the distance travelled (ST) we have to check if there is any reflection points (v=0)

𝑣 𝑡 = 3𝑡 2 − 6𝑡 𝑚Τ𝑠 = 0 𝑡 3𝑡 − 6 = 0, 𝑡1 = 0 𝑠𝑒𝑐, 𝑡2 = 6Τ3 = 2 𝑠𝑒𝑐

Now, we have to get the position at three times:

𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑓𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝑡 = 0 𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝑡 = 2 𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝑡 = 3.5 𝑠𝑒𝑐

Problem 2
A particle moves along a horizontal path with a velocity of v = (3t2 - 6t)
m/s, where t is the time in seconds. If it is initially located at the origin O,
determine the distance traveled in 3.5 s, and the particle’s average
velocity and average speed during the time interval.
Solution
𝑠 𝑡 = 𝑡 3 − 3𝑡 2 𝑚 𝑣 𝑡 = 3𝑡 2 − 6𝑡 𝑚/𝑠 𝑡𝑣=0 = 2 𝑠𝑒𝑐
Time Position
(sec) (m)
0 0 𝑠 0 = 03 − 3 ∗ 02 =0
2 -4 𝑠 2 = 23 − 3 ∗ 22 = −4 𝑚
3.5 6.125 𝑠 3.5 = 3.53 − 3 ∗ 3.52 = 6.125 𝑚

Problem 2
A particle moves along a horizontal path with a velocity of v = (3t2 - 6t)
m/s, where t is the time in seconds. If it is initially located at the origin O,
determine the distance traveled in 3.5 s, and the particle’s average
velocity and average speed during the time interval.
Solution

Distance covered at 3.5 sec.=(4)+(4)+(6.125)=14.125 m 𝑣𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑣. = 𝑆𝑇ൗ∆𝑡 = 14.125Τ3.5 = 4 𝑚/𝑆

Displacement covered at 3.5 sec.=6.125 m 𝑣𝑎𝑣. = ∆𝑆Τ∆𝑡 = 6.125Τ3.5 = 1.75 𝑚/𝑆

Problem 3
The driver of a car travelling 65 km/hr sees a traffic light 450 m a head
turn red. The light will be red for 15 sec and then turn green for 30 sec
a)What Constant acceleration will enable the car to pass the light at the
instant it turns green and what is the corresponding speed when passes
the light b) what constant acceleration will enable the car to pass the
traffic light with a speed of 16 km/hr ? will the light be red or green at that
instant? Solution
a)It turns green at 15 sec

Time, distance, Initial velocity are known Acceleration and Final Velocity is required

𝑠= 𝑣𝑜 𝑡 + 1Τ2 𝑎𝑡 2 = 65 ∗
5
15 + 1Τ2 𝑎 15 2 = 450 𝑚 𝑎 = 1.6 𝑚/𝑆 2

𝑣 = 𝑣𝑜 + 𝑎𝑡 = 65 ∗ + 1.6 (15) = 42.056 𝑚/𝑠
