8552 Unit 6 Homework 1

This document outlines homework assignments for a design course. It includes questions about primary and secondary research methods, evaluating computer mouse designs, analyzing a skateboard helmet design, and considering more sustainable manufacturing. Specifically: 1) Students are asked to provide an example of primary and secondary research methods. 2) Two computer mouse designs are compared based on ergonomics, cost, durability, and other factors. 3) A skateboard helmet design is examined in terms of ergonomic and anthropometric considerations for sizing and fit. Students are asked to propose a design amendment to accommodate varying head sizes. 4) The importance of designers sourcing more ecological manufacturing methods is discussed in terms of

Homework 1 Investigation

Unit 6 Designing principles

Homework 1: Investigation
1. Primary and secondary research are both necessary for the modern designer.

2. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each of the computer mice below with
regards to ergonomics, anthropometrics, manufacturing cost and durability:

Mouse A Mouse B
Advantages of Mouse A Advantages of Mouse B
Cheaper Rechargeable
More accessible Hand ergonomics

Disadvantages of Mouse A Disadvantages of Mouse B

No hand ergonomics Cost more
Not rechargeable size

3. A skateboard helmet is shown below.

(a) Suggest two ergonomic considerations that will have been factored in at the
design stage. [2]
Protection capabilities how it sits on the head

(b) Anthropometric data was used in the design of the helmet.

(i) State what is meant by anthropometrics. [1]
physical measures of a person's size, form, and functional capacities.

(ii) Suggest two anthropometric considerations that would have been relevant in
the design of the helmet and give a reason why each would be necessary. [4]

Anthropometric consideration Reason

To see how big to make the

1 Head size
helmet

So the helmet does not reach far

2 Movement at neck enough to impair neck
movement

(c) You have been asked to consider how the helmet design could be amended to fit
people of varying head sizes.
Briefly explain one suitable amendment to the design.
Being able to expand the helmet horizontally to provide a bigger possible helmet [2]

(d) Explain how a design specification is used both before and after prototyping. [3]

The specification provides clear instructions on project intent, performance and
construction. It can reference the quality and standards which should be applied. Materials
and manufacturers' products can be clearly defined. Installation, testing ,handover
requirements can be identified and the design can be changed depending on problems or
issues that may arise

4. Give two reasons why it is important for designers to source more ecological
ways to manufacture products.

minimizes a product's negative impact by factoring environmental concerns into

its specifications
more efficient use of natural resources.
