SECTION-D
The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice
and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions
that follow.
31. Amino acids are classified as acidic, basic or neutral. An equal number of amino and
carboxyl groups makes it neutral. The amino acids, which can be synthesised in the body, are
known as non-essential amino acids. On the other hand, those which cannot be synthesised in
the body and must be obtained through diet, are known as essential amino acids.
5
Amino acids are usually colourless, crystalline solids. These are water-soluble, high-melting
solids and behave like salts rather than simple amines or carboxylic acids. In an aqueous
solution, the carboxyl group can lose a proton and an amino group can accept a proton, giving
rise to a dipolar ion known as a zwitter ion. This is neutral but contains both positive and
negative charges. In zwitter ion form, amino acids show amphoteric behaviour as they react
with both acids and bases.
32. Systems that form azeotropes cannot be separated by fractional distillation, although in
some cases, the formation of the azeotrope can be precluded by changing the distillation
pressure. Problems of separation are also found with mixtures of liquids with similar
volatility. Separation of these systems can be facilitated by adding a third component. If this
component forms one or more azeotropes with the original components of the mixture, the
process is called azeotropic distillation. The addition of a relatively nonvolatile component,
which alters the relative volatility of the original components, gives a process known as
extractive distillation.
The direction of osmosis can be reversed if a pressure larger than the osmotic pressure is
applied to the solution side. That is, now the pure solvent flows out of the solution through
the semi-permeable membrane. This phenomenon is called reverse osmosis and is of great
practical utility. Reverse osmosis is used in the desalination of seawater. When pressure more
than the osmotic pressure is applied, pure water is squeezed out of seawater through the
membrane. A variety of polymer membranes are available for this purpose.
Answer the following questions:
a) Give an example of maximum boiling azeotropes.
b) Why is the osmotic pressure of 1 M KCl higher than that of 1 M urea solution?
c) 200 cm3 of an aqueous solution of protein contains 1.26 g of the protein. The osmotic
pressure of such a solution at 300 K is found to be 2.57 × 10–3 bar. Calculate the molar mass

OR
c) A solution is prepared by dissolving 10 g of non-volatile solute in 200 g of water. It has a
vapour pressure of 31.84 mm Hg at 308 K. Calculate the molar mass of the solute. (Vapour
pressure of pure water at 308 K = 32 mm Hg)
