    Community Dynamics and Community Action

    What is Community and Why is there a Need in Studying this?

    When studying a community, one must first grasp what constitutes a


    community, as well as community dynamics and behavior. Individuals having
    significant interaction within a specified area becomes one of the contributory factors
    in forming a community. The word community was derived from the Latin word
    communis which means “common” or “shared”. In general, communities are defined
    by their shared cultural history, language, beliefs, and interests. Geographical
    community is a community where members share the same geographical vicinity
    such as a village, province or neighborhood. Non Geographical community is a
    community formed based on needs, ideas, interests, identity, practices, and roles in
    social institutions such as at home, all work, in government, society, or the community
    at large.

    In order to develop a community, communication and relationships are


    essential. Relationships develop as people speak and interact. It creates a pattern that
    is used in the surroundings. Communities may also be in two levels: Micro-level
    community, a group is formed based on personal ties. This may include groups
    formed for pursuing common interests or goals like forming a small organization to
    hold a fund-raising activity such as concerts. At macro-level, large group affiliation is
    formed such as national communities, international communities, and virtual

    communities. Companies and corporations may develop various programs that would
    include different members across the country. They will work on meeting certain
    objectives and expand on the aspect of community involvement.

    Community Dynamics refers to the progress and development of a


    community, which encompasses all types of living beings. It is the changes in the
    community brought about by social, cultural and environmental experiences whether
    it is positive or negative development that impacts within the community. It may share
    a certain sense of place whether it is geographical area or through a virtual space.

    Community Action refers to putting communities at the center of service


    development and delivery. It is any activity that aims to increase the understanding,
    engagement and empowerment of communities for the intention of giving services to
    people. Before implementing this effort, it attempts to provide the basic necessities of
    the communities. As a result, community action will aid community dynamics or the
    degree to which the community improves. It is critical to comprehend these two since
    they will drive the communities' development and stability. They are proportionally
    related and go hand in hand.

    The dynamics of a community is determined by its nature and structure and


    how it reacts with external or internal forces. It's crucial to grasp a community's
    qualities and attributes in order to comprehend why it acts and reacts the way it does.
    Here are the following features of community:

    1. A community is defined by a sociological construct, or a set of human


    interactions or behaviors that have significance and expectations for its members.
    2. A community's boundaries are hazy or unclear, and they have remained that
    way to this day. People engage not only with those in their village, but also with those
    outside of it.
    3. A community can exist within a larger community including districts, regions,
    ethnic groups, nations, and other boundaries
    4. A community may relocate in order to find work.

    Moreover, a community, in order to have its dynamics at play, needs power


    actors to bring about its n actors to bring about its needed change. These powers
    needed change. These power actors should have the car. Actors should have the
    capacity to influence the decision-making and distribution processes to get things done
    in a community. This reality indicates that to work in a community or to undertake
    community interventions is a challenging task. Finally, development work requires
    understanding community dynamics and processes.

    a. Take a mental tour through the neighborhood where you belong.
    b. Close your eyes and envision yourself travelling back in time to events that
    occurred in your community 5-10 years ago, or to a time when the Covid-
    19 pandemic has not yet struck. Be calm and let your mind wander from
    the historical events in your community to the current year.
    c. Determine the changes that occurred in your neighborhood 5-10 years ago
    on your mental tour.
    d. Create a poster to compare and contrast your town back then and now.
    e. Identify the major community dynamics and community activity that
    resulted in changes in your community in your poster.
