Unusual Sports Events

Four teenagers describe unusual sporting events they have attended

A  Dan: Cliff-diving
Last year I was lucky enough to go on holiday in the Azores, where as well as
various watersports, you can go whale watching. I gave that a miss because
it’s pretty tame compared to the thing I was lucky enough to see – cliff diving.
Basically there’s a platform attached to some really steep cliffs, twenty-seven
metres above the sea – and the competitors dive off. It’s amazing. The only
downside is that if you want to see the action, you have to hire a boat. We
eventually managed to arrange this, having firstly tried to watch from the land.
But only the judges are close enough to the cliff edge to really see the dives
themselves, so it was a bit pointless being there. Once on the boat, you can
download the App to see the scoreboard in real time. That way, you know who’s in
front, but you’re also closer to the action. I’m hardly a great diver, but I can imagine
it’s the experience of a lifetime.

B  Katie:  Flug Tag

When I was in South Africa last year, I saw an extreme sports event called Flug
Tag, where you can see human-powered flying machines in action. I was a bit
taken aback to see that not all the contestants were taking it that seriously, even
though there are pretty strict rules you have to follow. The flying machines come in
all sorts of shapes and sizes and they’re mostly home-made and fairly whacky. One
by one, they’re ‘launched’ off a platform 30 metres above the sea – and they don’t
stay in the air very long. You wouldn’t get me up in one of those things. Anyway, it
was really entertaining, even if I couldn’t tell you who had won or how the scoring
worked. Like most of the people there, I was too busy enjoying the spectacle to
worry about that – though apparently there is a website where it’s all explained.

C  Seb:  Soapbox Racing

I didn’t know what to think when my cousin Jed suggested going to see soapbox
racing. It was a new sport for me. He explained that some friends of his had
designed and built their own cars and were entering them in a race. Now, when
he said ‘car’, I got the idea that we were talking about engineering. But actually,
four-wheeled soapbox cars have no motor and any speed they reach is purely the
result of gravity as they descend a winding course with obstacles along it. Apart
from that, the only rules seem to be that a helmet is compulsory and so is a brake,
but there may be others. I didn’t get to have a go in a ‘car’ myself, but some of the
whacky designs that people had come up with were awesome. Jed’s friends seemed pretty committed, even if their
cars are a bit improvised. They didn’t actually win anything, but it was a great day out.

D  Emily:  Freestyle Soccer

When it comes to ball control, some of the most skilful players in the world are
to be seen at freestyle soccer tournaments, and it’s a shame there’s not more
media attention. Because the players compete at an individual level, you don’t
get the excitement of a big match with opposing teams, but if you want to see an
exhibition of real soccer skills, then it’s the place to be. Each player has just three
minutes and a ball to show what they can do, and they’re on their own. As well
as the feet, freestyle involves the head and shoulders, and some players do the
whole thing sitting down – that’s amazing. The other amazing thing about freestyle
is that girls can do just as well as boys, as I’ve proved a number of times at local tournaments. It took me some time to
realise what the judges were looking for, but once I’d cracked that, it was just a matter of practice.
