Construction of check dams was undertaken in Purulia and Bankura districts of West Bengal to support rural farmers by ensuring water for agriculture and daily life. 35 check dams were constructed across rivers and streams to harvest monsoon water for irrigation in late kharif and rabi seasons. These check dams benefitted over 24,800 farmers and distributed water through gravity flow or lifting devices. Farmers were satisfied with the reliable water resources provided by the check dams. Community ownership of check dam management was important to maximize benefits and maintenance over time.

Construction of Check dams by Irrigation & Waterways

Department under RKVY within Districts: Purulia and Bankura

Introduction :
Construction of Check Dams within Bankura and Purulia has been undertaken under
RKVY with an objective to support 24800 rural farmers by ensuring water resources as
basic need for agriculture activities as well as daily life . The project as approved by
SLSC, consists of construction of 30 Check Dams at Purulia and 05 Check Dams at
Bankura in a period of 5 years with an outlay of Rs 4138 lakhs. So far 35 projects have
been executed .

Water Harvesting Structure : Check Dam

Check Dams are small height masonry structures built across rivers or rivulets to
harvest the monsoon water to be utilized in late kharif / rabi season for irrigation and
other purposes. Check Dam has been provided with required number of MS gates to
allow monsoon flood to go downstream. These gates are put in, once the flow in the
stream recedes. The water from these Check Dams is distributed to field level by gravity
flow or either lifted through individual pumping devices by the farmers or through
Community Lift Irrigation Schemes .

Initiatives

30+5 Check Dams have been constructed so far in different villages. The details of
these structures are as under:

All the above Check Dams are functional and serving the purpose, for which they have
been planned. The management of these Check Dams, particularly removal of Shutters
before monsoon and fitting of those shutter after receding of flood is being taken care by
local community themselves.

Impact

The intervention has significant impact on the quality of life of farmers residing around
the Check Dams. Farmers are extremely satisfied with these assets.

Lessons Learnt

The execution of above project has a lesson that community ownership is essentially
needed to be ensured to achieve the maximum benefit of community assets, particularly
when it is created around critical element like ‘water’. Since this is an infrastructure
based project, there would be need for periodical maintenance / up keeping of these
structures after certain period of time.
