decades of being one of the best bands in history. When they rose to stardom in the early 1960s,
their fans were in awe with their love songs. These songs were predominantly about playful and
uncommitted love which made their young fans fall hard for them. As time went on, the songs
and albums released by the Beatles seemed to become less about love and more about
heartbreak. Maturity and getting into serious relationships were showed in the lyrics of these
songs but were also quite relatable to their fans who were growing in age with them. Only a year
after the Beatles release of their first album, Please Please Me, A Hard Days Night gave a more
modern feel to their music. One song in particular, “A Hard Days Night” written by John
Lennon, contains many types of love and different love languages. The feeling of this song is not
like the typical love songs released in their previous album. It shows sophistication and
commitment in a long-lasting relationship. This song contains all five of the love languages:
words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts and two of
the seven love languages: eros and pragma. The music has a more upbeat feel to it, with
instruments such as the drums, guitar, and cowbell. Additionally,“A Hard Days Night” connects
to several songs we have already discussed in class such as “If I Fell”, “And Your Bird Can
Sing”, “When I’m Sixty-Four”, and “I will”.
The lyrics of a love song can be broken down to figure out what love languages are
portrayed through the music. Words of affirmation, which are words said to reassure one’s
significant other of their love and to uplift them, can be seen in several verses. In the beginning
of the song, the band sings, “But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do, Will
make me feel alright”. When John wrote this verse, he could be saying that when he gets home
from a hard day, she makes him feel better and is assuring her that her actions mean a lot to him.
His home is her and he works hard to get her everything she wants. In the lyrics, John wrote that
“And it's worth it just to hear you say, You're gonna give me everything”. He wants to know that
his work is not going unnoticed and that she is able to get everything that she desires. John also
states how he craves to spend quality time with her when he gets home from work. This quality
time can be seen in the lyrics, “Cause when I get you alone, You know I feel okay” and “Feeling
you holding me tight, tight, yeah”. When he is home alone with her, it makes his worst days feel
great and his mood brightens. Cuddling and holding each other tight shows the undivided
attention from both him and her. With no distractions, just him lying in the arms of his lover,
makes him feel special and loved. The line “Feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah” relates to
the love language of physical touch. This shows the physical action of embracing and holding
each other tight. “A Hard Day's Night” demonstrates a man wanting to work hard to provide for
his lover and she provides him with the comfort and love that he wants. In the lyrics, “You know
I work all day, To get you money to buy you things”, this can portray the two remaining love
languages, acts of service and receiving gifts. He works hard to give her everything she wants or
needs. For a lot of men, they find it fulfilling that they are able to provide for their loved ones,
although in this generation, many women find happiness in providing for themselves.
While analyzing this song, it is evident that there are two of the seven types of love
languages: eros and pragma. Eros, which is described as sexual and passionate love can be seen
in the lyrics, “Cause when I get you alone, You know I feel okay”. From an eros love
perspective, he may want to be alone with her so they can make love. Making love is important
in most relationships and makes those involved happy and loved. This song seems to describe a
long-lasting relationship, known as pragma. He is living with his lover, which is a step that is
usually taken later in a relationship and his words seem more of a mature manner. Again, the line
“But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do, Will make me feel alright” shows him
coming home to her welcoming embrace. A pragma based relationship can also contain the
actions of eros love. Long-lasting relationships tend to thrive when both individuals remain
passionately in love with each other.
When reading just the lyrics, it seems as though the instrumentals would portray
somewhat of a bluey feel. But when listening to the song, it is quite upbeat and spunky. This can
be because after a terrible day at work, he comes home to his love and it makes him feel happy
again. When they get to the verse “But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do,
Will make me feel alright” the tempo speeds up. This seems to demonstrate his excitement of
coming home to her. The drums are heard over all of the other instruments and there is also a
cowbell present towards the middle of the song. This adds more funk and uplifts the beat of the
song.
“A Hard Days Night” relates to other Beatles songs that have been discussed in class and
in the reading responses. The song “If I Fell”, the songs starts off sounding like playful love
known as ludus, but then begins to show eros love in the lyrics, “If I give my heart, To you, I
must be sure, From the very start, That you, Would love me more than her”. It seems as though
he is maturing in relationships and wants to be sure that he is not wasting his time. This relates to
“A Hard Days Night” because the song mostly demonstrates pragma and eros similar to “If I
Fell”. As previously stated, John shows his love through all the love languages, especially acts of
service, by working hard so his girl can get whatever she wants. However, in the song “And Your
Bird Can Sing”, it focuses on how a woman he is interested in has everything she wants and can
provide for herself. This is shown in the first line “You tell me that you've got everything you
want”. The repeated line of “You don’t get me” tells of how the girl may not see his efforts of
getting to know her.
From this analysis of “A Hard Days Night”, it is evident of the love depicted in this song.
All five of the love languages were present as well as two of the seven love types. The music
portrayed an uplifting feeling that showed his happiness when he got home from work to his
lover and connected to several other pieces of music discussed in class. This song helped me to
answer the question of “What is love?” and for that I would say home. Home is where people
feel secure and comfortable. People can be compared to home, for they may portray the same
characteristics of one.
