On October 13,1972, a plane with 45 people crashed into a mountain in the Andes. Sixteen survivors stayed
inside the crashed plane to stay warm with very little food they had. They found a small radio on the plane and they
heard the news that the rescue teams had stopped searching for them. All hope was gone so they were alone and
terrified.
Two months after the crash, three brave young men Roberto Canessa, Nando Parrado and Antonio Vizintin, left
to search for help. They climbed very perilous icy peaks trying to reach the summit of the mountain. They wanted to
see a valley below which could take them out of the mountains. However, they saw more snowy peaks. They were in
the middle of them. What could they do now?
There was still hope as Parrado saw two low peaks about 65 kilometres away that didn’t have snow on them. He
came up with a solution. Vizintin could return to the plane and the rest would take his food to continue their journey.
As they walked, they discovered a small river and the sun was warmer until they found a way out- a valley. They
found some cans on the ground and some farm animals in the field. They knew there must have people somewhere
nearby.
On December 21st, they reached the town of Los Maitenes in Chile, and a rescue team went to save the other
passengers high up in Andes. Fortunately, they had all survived and their ordeal was over. They had made it out- alive.
