Illustrate implicit differentiation (STEM_BC11D-Illi-2); and 2. solve problems (including logarithmic, and inverse trigonometric functions) using implicit differentiation (STEM_BC11D-IIij-1).. LET'S KICK IT OFF! Find the derivative ($2) of the functions: 1. y= 4x5 + cos(2x ~ 7) 2 xtty?=5 ARE YOU TAKING IT? Which of the expressions which you find easy to solve right away? Why? How is item number 1 different on item number 2? Which of the following expression is an explicit function? an implicit function? How do we deal with the derivatives of implicit functions? HERE’S HOW IT IS! Explicit function — is a type of function wherein its arrangement clearly defines that the y variable is a function of . Based on the observation; the variable is isolated on the other side of the equation from the variable together with its constants. Example: y = x? — 2x +7 Implicit function — is a type of function wherein its arrangement does not clearly define that the variable is a function of . Based on the observation; the variable is combined in the variable together with its constants. Example: xy + 2y — 7x = x? Implicit differentiation — is the process of taking the derivative of an implicit function. Steps in differentiating implicit functions: 1. Take the derivatives of the function on both sides of the equation with respect to x. Use the Chain rule of differentiation when taking the derivative of the variable y. 2. Then by using algebra, solve for EXAMPLE 1. Differentiate the expression x? + y? Solution: Step 1: Take the derivative of both sides with respect to x. ca ad = Ee V=EO ‘Step 2: Since the left side equation is a sum of two terms, apply the Sum rule of differentiation by distributing the derivatives to both of them. Cd d Rot R= ZO ‘Step 3: Perform the differentiation process. Use the power rule of differentiation on the first term, then use the Chain rule on the second term (keep in mind that whenever you are taking the derivative of the variable y the answer is ©) and lastly use the constant rule of differentiation on the third term. 7 iy 2x+2y«(Z)=0 Step 4: Use algebraic manipulation to isolate 2 on one side of the equation solely and the rest to the other side. Statement Remarks Subtract 2x on both sides of the equation. Divide both sides by 2y and simplify. Final answer. EXAMPLE 2. Find the slope of the tangent line to the circle x? + y? = 5 at point (—2, 1). Solution: The slope of the tangent line on the circle at any given point on it can be solved by taking its derivative: that ?), Using the solutions on EXAMPLE 1, we found out that aaa ey ee at ism=Z(t+y? ‘Substituting x = —2 and y = 1, we find that the slope is y | =e La =o-5 Hence, the slope of the tangent line to the circle x? + y? = 5 at point (-2,1) is 2. EXAMPLE 3. Find 2 for y3 + 4y? + 3x?y + 10 =0, Solution: ‘Step 1: Take the derivative of both sides = dg gy a with respect to 2. By” + 49? + 3x7y + 10) = 7 (0) ‘Step 2: Since the left side equation is a sum of two terms, apply the Sum rule of differentiation by distributing the derivatives to both of them. And on the right side, apply the Constant rule. ‘Step 3: Perform the differentiation process. Use the power rule of diferentiation on the 1" & 2" terms, then use the Product rule on the 3° term (keep in mind that whenever you are taking the derivative of the variable y the answer #), and asty use the Constant rule of diferentition on the 4" tenn. ‘Step 4: Use algebraic manipulation to isolate © on one side ofthe equation solely and the rest to the other side. da Ee eee de Ot GO) + Gy) + FAO = 0 dy od 4 ay? 24 oy Pa ax? 2+ oxy =0 Peay? tay tax) + 6xy =0 Y 3,2 2) Je OY? + By + 3x?) = —6xy dy___~6xy dx 3y? + By + 3x7 Implicit differentiation can be applied to any kind of function, whether they are polynomial functions, or functions that involve trigonometric and exponential quantities. ‘Summary of De!
