PERFORMANCE CALCULATIONS

..ABSOLUTE CEILING

We know that at absolute ceiling R/C becomes 0

R/C=( Treq*V – D*V)/ Wgross = 0

For minimize the power , differentiate D*V wrt to V ,we get 2*rho*v^2*s = 61622.04 where rho and
v are at sea level .

Rhoreq= 61622.04 * 1.22/676000

Rhoreq= 0.11

Treq=676000*rhoreq/rho ; On solving we get rhoreq = 0.011 which is at altitude of 18,300 m as seen

from Appendix

Max Velocity at sea level

At level flight : Tav = (W/CL)*Cd

Assume : Tav = 152200 lb , qsea = 0.0023 ; S 3856.2 ft^2 ; W = 455940 lb (max weight);

CASE 1: AT velocity = 500 ft/s

cl=2*w/(qsea*x2*500^2)

0.1269303; cd=cd0+cl^2/(3.14*e*ar)

cd = 0.0235052

Treq= (W*CD/CL)= 62967.436

CASE 2: At velocity = 900 ft / s

cl=2*x3/(qsea*x2*900^2)

cl = 0.1269303; cd=cd0+cl^2/(3.14*e*ar)

cd = 0.0235052

Treq = ( W* CD/CL) ; ans = 84431.835

Case 3 : at velocity = 1500 ft / s

cl=2*x3/(qsea*x2*1500^2)

cl = 0.0456949 ;cd=cd0+cl^2/(3.14*e*ar)

cd = 0.0204543

Treq = W*cd/cl

ans = 204091.05500

Case 4 : at velocity 1200 ft /s

cl=2*x3/(qsea*x2*1200^2)

cl = 0.0713983 ; cd=cd0+cl^2/(3.14*e*ar)

cd = 0.0211091

Treq = W*cd/cl

ans = 134799.69

Case 5 : at velocity 1250 ft /s

cl=2*x3/(qsea*x2*1250^2)

cl = 0.0658007 ;cd=cd0+cl^2/(3.14*e*ar)

cd = 0.0209420

Treq = W*cd/cl

ans =145109.27 = Tav ( approx.)

hence we can say that max velocity at sea level is approx. 1250 ft / s .We have assumed here that

thrust available = thrust with after burn

Climb Rate at Sea Level :

Case 1: At velocity 500 ft/ s

R/C =V *( Tav max – Treq at sea )/Wmax

Treq =62967.436; T av =152200 ; w=455940 ( max take off weight) ; v=500

On solving above ,we get R/C = 97.855599 ft /s= 5871.3359 ft /min

Case 2 : At velocity 900 ft /s

Treq = 84431.835 ; Tav = 152200 ;

R/C =( T av – T req) *V/W max

R/C = 133.77056 ft /s = 8026.2335 ft/min

Case 3 : At velocity 1250 ft/s

Treq = 145109.27 ; V = 1250

R/C = (Tav -Treq )* V /W max

R/C = 19.439866 ft/s

From above data we can predict that R/C will become 0 at sea level when V will be in a range of

1300 – 1500 ft/s .We have taken thrust with after burner

Glide Angle

Minimum glide angle occurs when CL/CD will become max .

(CL/CD)max = sqrt(cd0*pi*e*AR)/(2*cd0)

(CL/CD) max= 7.58

[ assuming that cl is constant with altitude ; e= 0.8 (assumotion) ; pi=3.14; AR=1.829; H = 60000 ]

Tan(theta) = 1/CL/CD

Tan (theta) = 0.13 ; theta = 8 deg ( approx. )

Range of glide at cruise altitude

Tan(theta) = 1/CL/CD = H( cruise ) / Range( cruise )

Range = 60000 * 7.58

Range = 454794 ft . ( approx.)

ENDURANCE

[ assuming that (CL/CD)max is constant with altitude

E = (CL/CD)max * ln (W0/W1) / ( Ct)

Ct = 0.6 lb of fuel /(lb of thrust )( hr) ( assumption ) ; W0 = 455940 lb ( total ) ; W1= 245000 ( zero
fuel weight ) ; (CL/CD) max = 7.58

From above equation ,on solving we get

E= 7.8515100 hr

Approx. endurance is 7.85 hrs

RANGE

[ as we know that Range is sensitive with altitude hence we assume that it is not changing with

altitude and we perform calculation for the cruise altitude . Rho at cruise = 0.00022 ; Ct = 1.19 lb of

fuel / ( lb of thrust )( hr) ( assumption ) ; W0= 455940 lb ; W1= 245000 ;

(CL^1/2/CD) max = [3*(1/3*cd0*pi*e*AR) ^1/4 ] / [ 4 * cd0 ] ,

on calculating this we get ( CL^1/2 /CD ) max = 1 5.75 ;

R = 2 * sqrt( 2/S )* 1/ ct *CL^1/2/CD * ( W0^1/2 – W1 ^1/2 )

R = 26264243 ft ( we have used ct in second and not in hrs )

R in mile = R/5280

ans = 4974.2885 mile

Here approx. Range is equals to 4974 mile with 2- 3 % of error

LIFT OFF DISTANCE

For dry Thrust

[ Max angle of attack = 16.5 deg and therefore CLmax corresponds to 1.73 ; g= 9.8 ( assume ) ;T dry

thrust = 149000 ; rho sea = 0.0023 ; ]

[Here we are assuming that drag as well as friction force are very small with respect to Trust ]

SLo = 1.44*W0^2 / ( g*rho sea *S*CLmax *T dry )

On solving we will get

SLo = 13360 . 78 ft = 4072 m ( approx.)

For Thrust after burner

Tav = 169000 ;

From above equation we can solve for SLo

SLo = 11780 ft = 3590 m ( approx. )

Min velocity at sea level

[ assume weight is constant ,rho sea = 0.0023; ]

For min velocity Cl should be max , CLmax = 1.73

Vmin = SQRT (2*w /( rho sea *CLmax*S ) )

On solving above equation ,we get

Vmin = 103 ft / s = 113 km/hr

Landing ground poll

[ for min landing ground poll cl should be max ]; [ Tav is dry thrust]

SL= 1.69*W0^2 /( rho sea *g*s*Tav*Cl max )

On solving above equation , we get

Sl = 4763 ft = 1451 m

[ Drag as well as Friction force are negligible here ]

TURNING RADIUS ( pull-up maneuver )

Here we are going to find the turning radius at sea level with take off speed which is equals to 402
km/h

[ assume that w is max weight = 455940 lb , CLmax = 1.73 , v= 366 ft/s ,g= 32.2 ]

L = 0.5*rhosea*v^2*S , n = L/S ( where n is the load factor )

L = 982964 lb , n= 2.15

R = v^2 /( g)(n-1)

On solving, we will get

R = 3617 ft = 1102 m

TURN RATE

Omega = v/R 0. 10 rad/s

TURNING RADIUS ( pull-down maneuver )

R = v^2 / ( g)(n+1)

R = 1320 ft ; omega = v/R = 0.277 rad / s
