The Reproductive System
The reproductive system is responsible for the reproduction and
creation of new life. Males have teo testes and a penis. Females have
a uterus, two ovaries, fallopian tubes, and a vagina.Women have a
monthly cycle of change that occurs in the female reproductive
system. This is called he menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs during
this cycle. This is when an egg is realeased from an ovary. The lining
of her uterus thickens. It prepares for the attachment of a fertilized
egg. Menstruation is an effect of the egg not being fertilized.
Fertilization occurs when sperm from a male join with an egg.
Each sperm and egg contains twenty-three chromosomes. The
chromosomes pass on inherited chacteristics from one generation of
cells to the next. Female sex cells are called eggs. An egg forms in
the ovaries. Male sex cells are called sperm.Sperm form in the testes.
Male sperm cells join with female egg cells. They create a single
fertilized cell.A fertilized cell is known as a zygote.
A zygote undergoes cellular division in the fallopian tubes. It
moves to the uterus after six to eight days. The uterus is where most
development occurs. The zygote multipiles rapidly. It form s an
embryo. An embryo is an organism in the early stages of
development. It becomes a fetus after the internal organs have
developed.
The fetus develops inside the uterus for about forty weeks. It is
attached to mother by the umbilical cord. The fetus receives blood
flow. It receives nutrients from arteries and veins in the umbilical
cord. It is surrounded by the amniotic sac and placenta. It is
nourished and has waste removed by the placenta. The fetus travels
out of the vagina during childbirth. Humans then undergo many
different stages of development. They will grow through infancy,
childhood , adolescence, and adulthood.

d.Egg
3. What is an effect of an egg not being fertilized?
a.Breathing
b. Nerve responses
c. Ovulation
d.Menstruation
4. What happens when sperm from a male join with an egg?
a.Ovulation
b.Menstruation
c.Fertilization
d. Circulation

c. Sending neurons to the lungs
d.Exhalation of oxygen
Choose the best item in each question to fill in the blank for the
passage below
First, Egg cells are produced in two almond-shaped organs known
as the (1)____.During the process of ovulation, a mature egg ovum
is released anf enters one of two (2)_____.For a few days the egg
cell travels towards the pear-shaped uterus. The lining of this organ
thickens in preparation for a fertil-ized egg. If the egg is not fertilized
by the male (3)______, it will leave the body together with the
lining of the uterus and a small amount of blood. This is called
menstruation.
The lower portion of the uterus is called the cervix and is a
common site of cancer in women. The female organ of intercourse is
the vagina. A circular fold of skin is usually present at the entrance
to this organ and is called the hymen. Outside of this organ are folds
of skin covered with public hair known as the (4)______. Between
these skin folds is a small, round, sensitive area of skin called the
clitoris.
The development of the reproductive system is triggered by the
hormones (5)_____ and progesterone, which cause many physical
changes in a girl. This period of change is called puberty.
