Introduction: Individuals who engage in various types of physical activities such as sports and exercise have
a higher risk of getting injured as compared to those who practice a sedentary lifestyle. However, the potential
benefits of an active lifestyle outweigh the risk of suffering an injury.

Most of the injuries are preventable and awareness of the risk factors will help in reducing the risk. Furthermore,
vigilance and safety measures can dramatically reduce the occurrence of injuries.

In this module, you will discover the safety practices in sports and exercise, and how to prevent injuries during
the activity.

Motivation: Pre-test
While watching a basketball game, you saw your friend go for a lay-up, another player tried to block his
shot and bumped your friend in mid-air.

Your friend lost his balance and fell on his back and his head hits the floor. It took several minutes before your
friend was able to get up. You saw him limp as he walks towards the bench.

1. Write two injuries that your friend could have suffered from the fall.
a.
b.
2. Are these injuries acute or chronic?

3. Should your friend be examined by a doctor? Why or why not?

5
Learning Competencies
At the end of the module, the students will be able to:
Self-assesses health-related fitness (HRF) status, barriers to physical activity assessment participation,
and one’s diet

Causes of Sports Injuries

Injuries are damaged tissues or organs which occur when it encounters trauma or physical force that is greater
than what it can resist or absorb. The tissues can withstand varying degrees of stress and strain, but it will break
down if it experiences an impact that is stronger than what it can tolerate.

Most Common Acute Injuries

Sprain
• Sprains are overstretched ligaments. The ligaments stabilize and limit joint mobility. When the joint is forced
interposition that is beyond its normal range, it will overstretch the ligament.

Strain
• Strain is a twist, pull, or tear of muscle or tendon (a cord of tissue that connects the muscle to bone). It is
also an acute, non-contact injury that results from overstretching or over contraction.

Fracture
• A fracture is a break, usually in a bone. If the broken bone punctures the skin, it is called an open or
compound fracture. Fractures commonly happen because of car accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Other
causes are low bone density and osteoporosis, which cause the weakening of the bones.
• There are different types of fractures, and the healing period is between three weeks to several months,
depending on the severity of the injury.

Dislocation
• Dislocations commonly occur in joints that allow a greater range of motion. when the bone is pushed out
of the proper alignment, The injury will cause a deformity and constant pain.

Concussion
• Concussions are life-
threatening Injuries because
they disrupt the normal
function of the brain. A severe
blow through the head could
cause the blood vessels in the
brain to rupture. As the
volume of blood increases, the
pressure inside the skull starts
to build up. The accumulated
blood will put pressure on the
brain, blocking the blood
supply to different areas of the
brain. If the condition is not resolved immediately, the brain starts to die. The individual needs to go to a
medical facility as soon as possible so the injury will not worsen.

6
Most Common Chronic Injuries
StressFracture
• Stress fracture commonly occurs among runners who train for long periods without adequate rest periods. The
repetitive workload creates microtrauma-as fake as a strand of hair in the bone and gets bigger over time. The usual
area affected is the shinbone.
Tendinopathy/Tendinitis
• The most common overuse injury in sports involves the muscle-tendon unit call tendinopathy or tendinitis. it is
usually due to muscle imbalance between muscle pairs.
Osteoarthritis
• Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of a joint that results in its deterioration. The friction deteriorates the cartilage that
protects the bones from rubbing against each other. The knee joint is the common site for the degenerative changes
that occur in the cartilage. The recovery period takes several months.
Bursitis
• The bursa is a sac-like muscular-skeletal structure that provides support and cushioning to the joint. it protects
commonly used joints such as the shoulders and the knee from repetitive mechanical stress. This injury is common
in swimmers and runners. The inflammation of the bursa interrupts the surrounding structures, causing pain during
movement. Very recovery usually takes two weeks to a month.

Sports Injury Prevention

1. Adopt a Comprehensive Training Program
2. Use protective equipment and practice the correct
technique.
3. Incorporate recovery strategies in the training program.
4. Follow rules and decorum during competition

How can the possibility of getting injured while training be minimized?

Fitness and training injuries can be prevented if an individual takes the necessary preparation and precautions
under the following variables.
1. Proper attire- the attire should be appropriate for the chosen activities. It is important to consider comfort
and protection when choosing appropriate attire. Special attention should be given when choosing footwear
because many chronic injuries are caused by inappropriate shoes. A good pair of shoes will provide
stability, support, cushion, and comfort.
2. Proper technique- an individual needs to consult a trainer and ask for proper instruction in performing the
chosen activity or exercise.
3. Gym etiquette- individuals that subscribe to gym facilities should be aware of the rules and etiquette. Each
facility has its list of rules, but these are the most common:
• ask for a proper spotter when lifting loads close to 1RM
• Do not drop the barbell at the end of the set.

7
• Put weights and dumbbells on designated racks.
• Be aware of the exercise area for each piece of equipment.
• Do not use a mobile phone inside the gym.
• On a track, the inner lane is for walking while the outer lane is for running.
• Do not engage in horseplay or talk in a loud voice.
• Do not wear loose jewelry while working out.

Introduction
Most sports injuries can be prevented by adequate preparation and knowledge of the environment.
In this module, you will learn about managing different sports injuries.

Motivation: Pre-test
Instruction: Based on the picture below write a short reaction and how will you manage the injured person?
Put your answer in the box.
What will you do?

9
Learning Competencies
At the end of the module, the students will be able to:
Sets FITT goals based on training principles to achieve and/or maintain HRF.
Engages in moderate to vigorous physical activities (MVPAs) for at least 60 minutes most days of
the week in a variety of settings in and out-of-school.

First Aid for Acute Injuries

The inspection or observation process is a passive component of a secondary survey which is usually
performed visually and manually. The coach or trainer should inspect for deformity, swelling, discoloration,
bleeding, and other possible signs of injury. Aside from visual inspection, the coach or trainer can palpate
the possible injury site while looking at the reaction of the injured athlete. The following questions can help
perform the inspection:

1. How is the athlete positioned?

2. Is there an obvious deformity, bleeding, skin discoloration, etc.?
3. Are there unusual bumps and bruises?
4. Is the bone and joint aligned normally?
5. Does the athlete complain of more pain when more pressure is applied?

Another aspect of the survey is identifying the location of the injury. The location of the injury helps the
coach and trainer understand the possible structures that could be damaged. The most painful area is usually
the injury site. The following questions can help in identifying the location and mechanism of injury:

1. What body part of the athlete needs support?

2. What body part can he/she not move?
3. Did the athlete feel or hear any popping or snapping sound?
4. Was there a contact before the athlete complained of pain?
5. What was the athlete doing before he/she complained of pain?

PRICE Principle
Swelling and other symptoms of inflammation (i.e., pain) can be controlled using the PRICE principle.
PRICE stand for Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Protect the injured body part as aggravation
will increase the inflammation.

10
What are the practical ways of controlling inflammation?
Inflammation is the first step of the healing process, which increases blood flow to the injured area. The
downside of increased blood flow is swelling. Studies show that the healing period is directly related to the
degree of swelling. It takes time to remove the fluid, and this can delay the healing process. The swelling of
the injured part should be controlled to move the healing process to the next phase.

Most common immobilization technique of the injured body part.
