I. LESSON TITLE Geometrical Constructions
II. MOST ESSENTIAL The learner uses compass and straightedge
LEARNING COMPETENCIES Lesson 1: To bisect line segments and angles (M7GEIIId-1)
(MELCs) Lesson 2: To construct perpendiculars and parallels (M7GEIIIe-1)
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT How to locate the midpoint and construct the angle bisector, perpendiculars and
parallels
Suggested
IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities
Time Frame
A. Introduction 10 minutes For today, you will use tools to construct geometric figures namely midpoint,
angle bisectors, perpendiculars, and parallels.
Observe the sketches of a
human face at the right. Do you
see the transition of the drawing
from an incomplete sketch to a
recognizable face?

Questions to answer:
1. Based on the sketches, how can you describe the lines (or segments) used to
sketch a face?
2. What is the purpose of those lines?
3. Where do you think can you apply these skills in constructing human face
sketches?
B. Development LESSON 1 How to Bisect Segments and Angles
To do measurements and constructions, appropriate tools are needed.
Below are tools you need for this lesson.

Straightedge compass
-tool used to draw lines, segments and rays -tool used to construct angles

15 minutes Activity 1 : How to Bisect a Segment

Task: Construct the bisector of ̅̅̅

𝐽𝐾 .

Procedure

STEP 1: Set-up your compass such that

the tips cover slightly more than half the
length of 𝐽𝐾
̅̅̅ . At point J, draw an arc as
shown.

STEP 2. Using the same set-up of the

compass, at point K, repeat STEP 1.

STEP 3: Connect the points of

intersection of the two arcs. Name this
segment - ̅̅̅̅
𝐿𝑁.

STEP 4: Name the point of intersection

of 𝐽𝐾
̅̅̅ and 𝐿𝑁
̅̅̅̅ as Point M.

Point M is called the midpoint. The midpoint bisects the segment.

Thus, ̅̅̅̅ 𝑀𝐾.
𝐽𝑀 = ̅̅̅̅̅

Activity 2 How to Bisect an Angle

15 minutes

TASK: Construct the angle bisector of ∠ E

Procedure

STEP 1: Place one of the tips of the compass

at point E. Draw an arc intersecting the
sides of the angle. Name the points of
intersection P and T.

STEP 2: At point P, set-up your compass

slightly wider than half the arc 𝑃𝑇
̂.
Draw an arc as shown.

STEP 3: Using the same set-up, repeat STEP

2 at point T. Name one of the 2 points of
intersection point W.

STEP 4: Draw 𝐸𝑊
⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ .

⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ is the ray bisecting ∠ E, thus it is called an angle bisector.

𝐸𝑊
An angle bisector divides the angle to two congruent angles.
Thus, 𝑚∠PEW= 𝑚∠WET or ∠PEW ≅ ∠WET.

LESSON 2 How to Construct Perpendiculars and Parallels
Recall that perpendicular lines are intersecting lines that form right
angle while parallel lines are lines that do not intersect. Both of these lines are on
the same plane.
15 minutes Activity 3 How to Construct Perpendiculars

Using the construction in Activity 1, right angles

are formed by the two segments. This is the same
procedure to construct perpendicular lines!

To show perpendicular lines, extend the two

segments to opposite directions, affixing arrow
heads as shown on the right.
In symbols, ⃡⃗⃗⃗ 𝐿𝑁.
𝐽𝐾 ⊥ ⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗

15 minutes Activity 4 How to Construct Parallels

Task: Construct a line parallel to a given line

k
Procedure

STEP 1:Draw line k intersecting line ⃡⃗⃗⃗

𝑃𝑇 at
point A.

k
STEP 2: At point A, set-up your compass
to draw an arc intersecting lines k and
⃡⃗⃗⃗ at points B and S, respectively.
𝑃𝑇

k
STEP 3: Using the same set-up, draw an
arc at a new point C on line k. Name the
point of intersection point D.

k
STEP 4: Set the compass opening as
wide as the distance between points B E
and S. At point D, draw an arc. Name
the point of intersection of the two arcs
point E.

k
STEP 5: Draw line passing through C and
E. This line is ⃡⃗⃗⃗
𝐶𝐸 .

⃡⃗⃗⃗ and 𝐶𝐸
𝑃𝑇 ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗ are called parallel lines. 3 of 4

Directions: Using a straightedge and a compass, perform the following tasks:
TASK A. Find the midpoint of 𝐴𝐵
̅̅̅̅. TASK B. Draw the angle bisector
The name of the midpoint is W. of ∠ Z.

TASK C. Construct the line TASK D. Construct the line

perpendicular to ⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑋𝑌. parallel to ⃡⃗⃗⃗
𝑅𝑆.
