Ngaben is a sacred ritual that is practiced in Balinese culture. This cremation
ceremony is held by Hindus to send off the dead person to the "next" life. Before the main
ceremony begins, the family of the dead person prepares a wooden ox. It is used to hold
the body. As the wooden ox is carried to the cremation site, the Balinese people try to
confuse the spirit of the dead person. They shake it, spin it around, throw things at it, and
carry it in a non-straight line. This is done to make sure that the spirit cannot find its way
back home.
After a series of rituals led by a priest, the wooden ox is set on fire to send the spirit
off to their "next" life. The family then picks up the ashes and spreads them in the ocean.
Unlike other death ceremonies, Ngaben is celebrated happily as it marks the end of the
family's duty. Balinese people believe that tears of sadness will keep the spirit away from
reaching the next life. So, they try to avoid crying during the ceremony.
Ngaben is not held immediately after someone's death. The priest recommends the
day of the ceremony based on the Balinese calendar. The preparation for the ceremony
can take anywhere from weeks to months. Some families need more time to save up
money for the cost. That‘s why they wait a few years after their family member has passed
