ii. COURSE INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION


Welcome to GNS 111. Citizenship education is education that provides the background
knowledge necessary to create an on-going stream of new citizens participating and engaging
with the creation of a civilized society.

Citizenship Education gives people the knowledge and skills to understand, challenge and
engage with democratic society including politics, the media, civil society, the economy and the
law to participate effectively and responsibly in public and democratic life.
Through Citizenship education, you can be able to:
1. explore questions about democracy, justice, inequality, how we are governed and
organised;
2. learn to work together to create solutions that try to address challenges facing
neighbourhoods and wider communities; and
3. develop political literacy to make a positive contribution to society as informed and
responsible citizen.

You are required to have the following to be qualified for this course.
1. 5 credits in “O” level certificate

The Course Material is written in a simple, clear and concise manner that will assist and enable
you to understand this course very well. Citizenship Education is an area many people want to
study because it is multidisciplinary in nature and it cuts across so many disciplines. Relevant
sites and standard references have been provided for you. There is going to be a lot of chatting
and online interaction in this class through social media. There will be individual assignments.
All assignments are due at the times slated. No late assignment will be entertained or accepted
from you and hence, be very serious with your study. Completion and timely submission of
assignments will also serve as part of your assessment. You are expected to read this course
material thoroughly and understand very well. You are also expected to have software
applications on your mobile phones like WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, a working email
address and a phone number so that you can chat, interact, and share ideas with one another.

Duration of tutoring is 13 Weeks, and you will be expected to put in a minimum of 2-hour study
time weekly.
