Assignment-No.-1-Sight Distance

This document is a 2 page exam for a Highway Engineering course containing 8 multi-part questions regarding highway sight distance, braking distance calculations, passing sight distance, and the effects of grade on stopping sight distance. The questions require calculations of sight distances, coefficients of friction, braking distances, passing times and speeds, and the maximum safe speed for various highway grades.

Course Title: Highway Engineering No. of Questions: 8
Examiner(s): Dr. Mostafa Radwan Sheet 1

Highway Sight Distance

1) a. Define sight distance and state its types.
b. Derive an expression for calculating the braking distance in terms of vehicle
speed, coefficient of friction, and the grade on which a vehicle operates.
c. What is the only case that you may use Passing Sight distance in the design?
d. What should be the length of braking skid marks for a car traveling at a speed of
90 km/h if it has to stop to avoid an accident?

2) Calculate the Stopping Sight Distance (SSD) required on a highway for a design
speed of 80 km/h, assuming that the perception and reaction time is 2.5 seconds
and the coefficient of longitudinal friction (f1) is 0.30. If the pavement becomes
so wet that, f1, is reduced to 0.25, what will be the required SSD? What is the
effect of 6% upgrade on the SSD calculated before?

3) A vehicle initially traveling at 150 km/h skids to a stop on a 3% downgrade,

taking 200 m to do so. What is the coefficient of friction on this surface? What
should the grade be if the coefficient of friction is 0.40?

4) A vehicle operating on an urban road with a speed limit of 80 km/h had a

collision with a vehicle, which moved from an intersection road with a stop sign.
The skid marks at the site of the accident were 65 meters in length and the
pavement was dry. Which vehicle was at fault and why?

5) Determine the Passing Sight Distance for a two-lane two-way highway given
the following information:
 Average speed of the slow vehicle = 60 km/h
 Average speed of the passing vehicle = 75 km/h
 Average acceleration rate = 2.5 km/h/sec
 Preliminary delay time = 3.0 sec.
 Left lane occupancy time = 7 sec.
6) a. Explain in general terms how sight distances affect geometric design of
highways, use sketches to demonstrate your answer.

b. A driver is traveling at 80 km/h on a section of an expressway. If he required

70m to completely stop his vehicle (braking distance), what coefficient of
friction was developed between vehicle tires and pavement surface? On
another section of this expressway with grade 5%, the total Stopping Sight
Distance was 260 m, what is the maximum safe speed on this section?

7) A student trying to test the braking ability of his car, determined that he needed
32 ft more to stop his car downhill on a particular road than uphill when diving
at 60 mph. Assuming that the coefficient of friction between the tires and the
pavement is 0.32, determine the braking distance downhill and the percent
grade of the highway at the section of the road.

8) a. A vehicle is traveling at 50 mph and the driver perception time is 1.5 sec and
reaction time is 0.5 sec. What will be his stopping sight distance on dry
concrete road with f = 0.56.
b. Assume conditions as in part (a) except that the vehicle is traveling down at
4 % grade. What will be his stopping sight distance on this case?
