The forward cargo pod fairing consists of a fiberglass shell that is mounted to an aluminum
substructure. The shell is segmented into 3 parts: (1) A forward fairing that replaces and integrates
the existing nose gear fairing, (2) a left and a (3) right half section that together comprises the
fairing for the nose of the cargo pod. Each segment is easily removable to facilitate servicing
activities.
The design of the forward cargo pod fairing reduces the drag otherwise generated by the blunt nose
of the cargo pod. The forward cargo pod fairing was also shown to be less susceptible to ice
buildup. This aspect, combined with the drag reduction allows for the fairing to be installed without
the need for a de-ice boot. This also allowed for the existing cargo pod nosecap boot to be
permanently deactivated. No other changes to the de-icing system or its operation are affected.
There are existing cowling drains and vents which are now covered by the forward cargo pod
fairing. These vents and drains have been relocated to the outer surface of the cargo pod fairing for
ease of access (see Figure 7-1).

The dual aft body strakes are mounted on the underside of the aft fuselage just aft of the cargo pod.
They are designed and engineered to attach and streamline the airflow over the aft body, reducing
drag and improving aircraft stability.
