ASSIGNMENT 1

NAME : …………………………………………………………
REGISTRATION NUMBER : …………………………………………………………
MARK :

INSTRUCTION:
This assessment consists of FOUR (4) questions. Answer all question

1. A centrifugal pump operates through the transfer of rotational energy from one or more driven
rotors, called impellers. State three type of Centrifugal pump and describe ONE (1) of that.
[5 marks] [CLO 2: C2]
2. A centrifugal pump was pumping water with a flowrate of 0.99m3/s when the relevant head
produced is 12.3m. If the efficiency of the pumps is 90.37%, determine the input power of the
pump.
[5 marks] [CLO2: C2]

3. In a pump test, centrifugal pump A and B as given characteristics data as shown on Table1 below,
when the pump is assembled in series connection. Plot graph for the efficiency and head versus
flow rate.
TABLE 1
Flowrate, Q x 10‐2 (m3/s) 0.00 0.30 0.65 1.00 1.30 1.50
Head pump A, Ha (m) 7.0 6.8 6.2 5.4 4.6 4.0
Head pump B, Hb (m) 13.5 11.5 9.8 7.9 6.3 4.5
Efficiency for pump A, ηa (%) 46.0 70.5 85.5 74.5 49.5 30.5
Efficiency for pump B, ηb (%) 26.0 35.5 70.8 88.7 56.7 40.2
For parallel connection: 𝜋 For series connection: 𝜋

Determine the discharge, head and output power of the pump at optimum point for pump in
series.
[15 marks] [CLO2: C3]

4. A centrifugal pump running at 830 rpm produces the data in TABLE 2 below:
TABLE 2
Flowrate, Q (liter/s) 0 100 200 300 350 400 500
Head, H (m) 19 18 18 16 14 12 7
Efficiency, η (%) 0 20 65 80 85 75 40

This pump was used to deliver water from a low tank to a high tank through a 500mm diameter
pipe along a 3000m total length of pipe. If the friction coefficient, f = 0.0025 and the head
difference the two tanks are 5m;
i. plot the graph of system characteristics
ii. determine the discharge, head and output power of the pump at operating point
[25 marks] [CLO2: C3]
