Ex - Heat Effects

The document is from the Chemical Engineering Department at Batangas State University regarding an exercise in Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics. It contains 5 questions asking students to: 1) Calculate the heat transferred when heating 10 mol of SO2 from 200 to 1100 degrees Celsius. 2) Calculate the final temperature when 800 kJ of heat is added to 10 mol of ethylene initially at 200 degrees Celsius. 3) Calculate the standard heat of combustion at 25 degrees Celsius for the reaction of 6CH3OH(g) → C6H12(g) + 6H2O(g) using data from Perry's. 4) Calculate the standard heat of combustion at 25 degrees Celsius for n-pentane

Exercise 3: Heat Effects
Second Semester, AY 2022-2023

Direction: Show your complete solution (given, formulas, and computation). Box your final answer
and round up to 3 decimal places.

1. For steady flow in a heat exchanger at approximately atmospheric pressure, what is the
heat transferred when 10 mol of SO2 is heated from 200degC to 1,100degC?

2. For steady flow through a heat exchanger at approximately atmospheric pressure, what is
the final temperature when heat in the amount of 800KJ is added to 10mol of ethylene
initially at 200degC?

3. Hydrocarbon fuels can be produced from methanol by reactions such as the following,
which yields 1-hexene:
6CH 3 OH(g) →  C 6 H 12 (g) +  6H 2 O(g)
Compute the standard heat of combustion at 25°C. Use Table 2-179 in Perry’s.

4. What is the standard heat of combustion of n-pentane gas at 25degC if the combustion
products are H2O(l) and CO2(g). Use Table 2-179 in Perry’s.

5. Evaluate the latent heat of vaporization ΔHn of Acetone by Riedel.
