Experiment No. 6:

PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF

SILVER NITRATE SOLUTION
(AgNO3)

Materials required:
Silver nitrate crystals
Distilled water
Diluted hydrochloric acid solution
Nitric acid

Preparation of silver nitrate solution

1. Weigh accurately 17.5 g of silver nitrate crystals
2. Dissolve the crystals in a sufficient amount of distilled water to make one (1) L solution
3. Pour the solution into a 1 L amber stock bottle
4. Label properly

Standardization of silver nitrate solution

1. Measure accurately 40 mL of silver nitrate solution, and then dilute the solution with 100
mL of distilled water. Heat the solution.
2. Add slowly with continuous stirring, standard hydrochloric acid solution until it has
produce there is a complete precipitation of sodium chloride.
3. Boil the mixture for 5 minutes.
4. Allow it to stand in the dark until the supernatant liquid is clear and all the precipitate has
settled at the bottom
5. Transfer the precipitate into a tared crucible
6. Wash the precipitate with small portions of distilled water, then acidified slightly with nitric
acid
7. Dry the precipitate at 110°C to constant weight. Determine the weight of silver chloride.
8. Calculate the molarity and normality of silver nitrate solution
