The abundance of Spring with greening hedgerows, daffodils and all the other spring
flowers, is such a welcome joy. It is always so exciting to see the 'first' of the spring
flowers. Little violets did pop up last month in the garden, but for me spring has truly
arrived when banks of primroses and cowslips appear and the bright green of the
'bread and cheese' hawthorn are abundant.
Blessings to all of you, this Eastertime.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Vicar's Newsletter for April 2023
Spring brings us an annual burst of hope - expressed in nature by new green
shoots and emerging new life. In the RSPB reserves the reed beds are
quivering with new bird-life. Toads emerge from hibernation for their spring migration to breed
where they were born- and the toad patrols are on full alert.
We certainly could do with a burst of hope at the moment.
“Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain, wheat that in the dark earth many days had
lain.”
Gardeners too are stirring in their potting sheds, planning for the year ahead. Springtime
activity in our churches is similar to that of gardening: doing a bit of spadework, digging and
spring- cleaning, trying to summon up some creative energy for new planting, new ideas for
fundraising and outreach. If you have ever thought of getting a bit more involved in church life
in any way at all, now is the perfect time – we really do need your help and support. Are
there any musicians out there? People who would like to join the flower rota? Any
unexpected/intriguing skills for cleaning? Have a word with a churchwarden or myself. You are
all most welcome to join our Sunday services.
With Easter falling early this year we can begin to welcome the new season of visitors to our
beautiful county - and the joy of rural life, writ large in our villages: cafes, pubs, shops and
medieval churches. We are so blessed to be living here, surrounded by the natural beauty of
the countryside.
“Love lives again, that with the dead has been; love is come again like wheat that springeth
green.”
'Hope springs eternal in the human breast...' hope that is nourished every Easter by coming
afresh to the story of Jesus's death and resurrection: the sacrificial love which invigorates and
sustains our churches, the hope that will never die; the redeeming, life-giving power of God
in Christ Jesus at work in our lives.
Over the past months we have lost many people from our villages. We are still reeling from the
sudden, untimely death of our dear friend, neighbour and colleague Reverend Julian
Thomson. A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place in St. Mary's Church at 2pm
on Saturday 22nd April. Julian wrote: “Be truly glad - there is wonderful joy ahead!” April
is in fact the most joyful month – despite what the poet TS Eliot says! - and the Easter
season lasts for five whole weeks into May and Ascension Day.
So, despite the huge challenges we face - walk with a spring in your step and hope in your
heart.
Happy Spring-cleaning, Happy Gardening! And most of all Happy Easter! With love,
Reverend Judith

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall
The year continues apace and we approach The Easter Fayre on Saturday 8 April
from 12 till 2 pm,
cancelled
And talking of Full House we have been approached by Ken Rout of the Paws
Companion Charity to hold Fund Raising Bingos at the Hall over the coming months.
As a Committee we think this is a fabulous idea and by the time this goes to print we
would hope to have our first date for you Bingo Lovers to come along to.
The Warmspace Grant money/project is coming to an end. Our spending will slightly
exceed the Grant money, but the overspend will be funded by the Hall, and it has
most certainly been beneficial to folk who otherwise, may not have had a hot meal.
So much credit goes to Sandi – amazing.
We initially said our original Food Bank commitment was until the end of March, but
we will undoubtably be having a discussion around this at our next meeting on
Wednesday 5th April at 6 pm., so if you have any feelings/ideas that you would like
to put to the Committee then please pop along and be as outspoken as you wish !!
Bitter sweet news from the Trustees is that due to outside interests and continuing
poor health Anne Lloyd has decided not to attend any future meetings but is happy to
continue as a Trustee and, on the plus side she is prepared to help out on an ad hoc
basis moving forward.
This highlights once again, the precarious line we are on with so few ‘Doers’ and it
will limit what the hall is able to offer in the future. So I say to you, reading this
article: Support it or lose it- No. I mean it: Support it or lose it.

Gayton Past Times
This month's photo was given to me by Chris Allen. It's not one I have seen before
featuring the Lattice Inn, Back Street Gayton. I thought it was an Ale House selling
beer to take away only. The Lattice Inn was mentioned in the 1901-1911 Census, but
in 1933, it is listed as a Grocery run by Violet and Daisy Hill. No mention of selling
beer.
My memory is of buying
sweets in the small shop
behind the front door. In the
early 60s the shop was
extended to make a small
supermarket, run by Sue and
John Brown. It changed hands
several times, ending up as an
Antique shop.
In 1994 it was sold and
converted into a domestic
dwelling, that we see today.
The surrounding properties
also remain today, with a few
new additions. Ken Dewing
Gayton Food Bank
Thanks to the wonderful and generous donations that are regularly given by many
people (most of who would prefer to remain anonymous) we are able to offer help to
several families including a couple of new users. I understand that it's not easy to
ask for help, but you can be assured of our confidentiality. I don't ask for details
except for number of children and food allergies. I sometimes get a call from social
services for a request for an emergency food package and am very pleased to be
able to help where I can.
All we ask for is politeness and consideration, as recently we had a request from
someone who became threatening and had to refuse them for our own safety.
Warm Space meals
These meals are also very successful including some deliveries to those that are
poorly or otherwise unable to get to the hall. Most food is made from scratch.
From very traditional dinners like bacon and onion steamed suet pudding, pies and
mince with dumplings to Spaghetti bolognaise, curries and sweet and sour with a
variety of desserts for afters there is no charge for these meals although donations
are most welcome (every penny raised goes towards the following week's meal and
any left over goes to the foodbank) any one is welcome to join us. Sandra Guest

Guides, Brownies & Rainbows
st
1 Gayton Brownies
Brownies have been thriving in Gayton since the 1970s and I became a leader with
them when my eldest daughter joined in 2001, picking up my involvement in
Girlguiding from when I was a girl guide and teenage young leader in London.
Although the uniform and programme change and update as the lives of girls evolve,
the basics remain – Brownies is a place for fun, friendships, adventure, and learning
skills for life.
Here's a brief review of what Gayton Brownies have been up to in 2023 so far;
In January girls made calendars and celebrated Chinese New Year. They completed
their Skills Builder Influence Badge, learning how to make their voices heard on
topics that are important to them in a clear way.
In the lead up to Girlguiding's annual Thinking Day, on 22nd February, we learned
about the World Badge and where we fit into the World Association of Girl Guides
and Girl Scouts. We played a Trefoil Trivia game and had fun with the Guiding in a
bubble activity (involving a lot of actual bubbles!).
Our Brownies enjoyed the Freebridge Lynn District Thinking day evening held at
Dersingham where we took part in conservation and environmental themed sessions
with other Girlguiding groups in our area. I wonder how well everyone's broad beans
are growing?
During half term 10 Brownies joined Gayton's Knit & Natter group where the very
patient ladies taught the girls to knit. We've had several knitted squares completed
since which will be used to create a small blanket for the unit. We all enjoyed our
visit and the cake was good too!
At the start of Fairtrade Fortnight, we discussed fair trade products and what we can
learn from the labelling. We cooked delicious chocolate bananas using Fairtrade
ingredients.
During March we celebrated International Women's Day by playing tennis, trying out
science experiments and finding out what other amazing things Beatrix Potter did
besides writing her Peter Rabbit Books.
We will be pizza making at Morrisons and celebrating Easter traditions before the
end of the spring term.
Girls are busy completing lots of Interest Badges at home and most popular recently
have been Charities and My Rights. It has been lovely to award several more Theme
Awards and a Bronze Award too. Girls gain their awards through a wide mixture of
different activities, from outdoor adventure to life skills and creativity.
We are looking forward to an exciting evening Hike, Campfire & Sleepover in April at
the Eaton Vale Activity Centre in Norwich.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful assistant leaders – we are a
great team and new adult volunteers are always welcome!

The Leziate and Ashwicken Parish Council
met on the 13th of March
The following key points were raised:
1. The lack of response regarding volunteers for the Speedwatch Team is most
disappointing, especially when residents raised concerns over speeding. If no
volunteers come forward by the end of April, the equipment will have to be returned
to the Police.
2. Good news regarding the withdrawal of the planning application for the Wellness
Centre and huge thanks to our Borough & County Councillors for their support along
with the residents. We are advised to "watch this space" as a new application could
be forthcoming in the future.
3. Election nomination forms and guidance are available on the website and we
encourage any residents who have an interest in our villages to consider applying.
4. The Village Hall now has CCTV installed and it is hoped this will prevent
vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
5. County Councillor Moriarty advised that £10k from his fund is banked to go
towards the highways survey on East Winch Road and Brow of the Hill.
Best regards, Caroline Boyden Parish Clerk

Rural Matters.
The 'S'-word. Yes Spring is here with all its sights and sounds. Salt – another 'S'-
word and as you drive around the coast you see masses of Alexanders growing
along the verges, with their yellowy flowers, enjoying the salty atmosphere.
Reputedly brought to Britain by the Romans as a substitute for celery, although I
have not tried eating it yet! Shortly you will see along the verges of many main roads
small white flowered Danish Scurveygrass. Traditionally peculiar to the seaside but
now spreading along roads that were salted in winter. Often seen as you go through
Bawsey on the way to Lynn.
Young fledglings will be hatching – I have already heard of Robins hatched near
Norwich in February! Check ponds and waterways and see if there any Tadpoles
(Pollywiggle in Norfolk). Usually the yellow Brimstone Butterfly is the first one
sighted in Spring, but there have already been sightings of Peacock and Red
Admiral.
Have you heard the Tawney Owls twit-awooing around the village in the evenings?
The differences between Rooks and Crows? They say if it is a Rook it is a Crow and
if they's Crows they's Rooks – Rooks gather in groups hence the rookeries around
the village where they roost. Crows are more solitary.
With Easter holidays coming up how about some ideas for activity outdoors
introducing the children to nature – a walk to see how many different tree leaves or
grasses they can see, and identify them later online. Will they see boxing Hares in
the fields? If they are lucky maybe a Water Vole or Kingfisher near some water.
Possibly a grass snake (non-poisonous) in a field.
As Water Vole, Kingfisher and Grass snake are in decline, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust
is asking to record them on their website for the next three months.
(norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk).
The trust also run holiday activities for children that are very popular – check out
Rockpool Rummaging, Dyke Dipping, Fossil hunting Coastal creatures etc.
Let us hope for reasonable weather to be able to spend time on being in the
countryside, looking at the nature around us, as new growth, flowering and birth
happen in the springtime. I am sure the second birthing of lambs will be in the fields
in April gambolling across the grass. John Hayes

The Bridge for Heroes – A local Charity with a National Reach
“My command is this: love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this:
to lay down one's life for one's friends.” John 15:12-13.
The Bridge for Heroes is a registered charity that provides mental health and wellbeing
support for the HM Armed Forces community, which includes serving members, veterans and
their families. By providing an initial point of contact at the Charity's Bridge Centre located in
South Clough Lane in King's Lynn, we are able to offer holistic support to all who seek help,
working closely with beneficiaries to resolve their issues and, where necessary, signposting
them to other services as required.
Additionally, the Charity has a second facility, located at Nelson House on the North Lynn
Industrial estate, which offers a variety of activities including Arts & Crafts, Photography,
Woodwork, Crochet and Knitting, Cycling, Bicycle Maintenance to name but a few. Both
facilities offer free hot beverages, biscuits and cakes and the Bridge Centre also offers hot
food daily, together with a Sunday Roast (to those on their own, isolated or lonely) and a
Veterans Breakfast on a monthly basis. All of our services, beverages and food are offered
free of charge and there is even free parking at Nelson House.
Further information about The Bridge for Heroes can be found on www.thebridgeforheroes.org

One Easter, a father was teaching his son to drive when out of nowhere, a
rabbit jumped out onto the road. Slamming on the breaks, the son said,’ I
nearly ruined Easter! I almost ran over the Easter Bunny.’
His father replied, ‘It’s okay son - you missed it by a hare.’

Grimston Cricket Club
THE CRICKET SEASON IS FINALLY HERE!!
After what feels like 6 years (rather than 6 months) we are all set for the
biggest season in our 100 year history, with All Stars (ages 5-8), Under
9s, Under 13s, and Adults teams turning
out to represent our club and community. The winter has
been an incredibly busy period as we have been putting
our plans into place, working with other clubs to arrange
fixtures and preparing the ground for the summer - the
highlights of this period have been seeing our newly laid
pitch coming to life, completion of the work on The Mark
Redhead Stand, and last month receiving confirmation
that we have won £10k in funding for an AstroTurf pitch.
Thanks to everyone in our community for their help in
making this happen.
We have a packed schedule of fixtures, with all of our matches available on our
website at www.grimston.play-cricket.com - your support means a lot to us and we
would love to see lots of you coming down to support the club and enjoy some sunny
Sunday afternoons.
We have also been incredibly fortunate to have some wonderful sponsors step up
and agree to sponsor matches or hang sponsorship banners at the ground -
particularly Phil Hurr Roofing, Hudson Fen Leisure Ltd, Biagio's Catering, Collison
Cut Flowers, Wayne Tuffs Builders, DAW Norfolk, TL Repairs, and Clean Tech. We
have also had sponsorship from Focus Security for our adults team kit, and The
Three Horseshoes, SW Electrical, and Kinsley Store for our kids teamwear. We are
always looking to work with new sponsors so please do
get in touch with us if you'd like to get involved -
[email protected].
And Finally....
What do you get if you cross a sheep dog with a rose?
A Collie Flower.
