ÔN SPEAKING HỌC KÌ I

I. Introduce yourself
- Good morning teachers, first of all I want to
thank you for giving me this opportunity and
it’s my pleasure to introduce myself. My
name is Pham Huyen Tran. Abt my name in
Vietnamese, Huyen Tran means a precious,
attractive treasure. That’s the reason I really
love this name which my parent give to me.
I’m 18 years old and this July I will turn to
19. I was born and raised in Ha Long but I
moved to Ha Noi 4 months ago to work and
study. I’m in the first year of my English
Studies at University of Labour Social
Affairs . To be honest, my parent chose it for
me. When I got a notice that I gonna be a
student in English studies of this university, I
thought I couldn’t have interested in English,
but when I had 3 months to have a chance to
learn with many great English teachers and
each lessons I can discuss with them and my
classmate then I feel English is so amazing
that give me a lot of knowledge and can make
me feel more confident to communicate with
many friends. I considered myself an
introvert person because I feel low on energy
when I go out in public, so I spend most of
my free time staying at home do whatever I
love, which make me feel so comfortable. I
have a strong passion for music so I often
make my own songs. Each song I write have a
small message in the lyrics, or sometime I
want to express my feelings through my
music, which is hard for me to show with
people around . It would be nice if you have
time to listen one of my songs uploaded on
utube, is named “Bat Nhac Len”. That’s all
my introduction, thank you for listening.

 Topic 1
e
1. What is the most popular
h
hobby in
your country? Do u think
e it will
remain popular in the
r future?
e
- Well, there are plenty of activities that
I
Vietnamese people enjoy doing in their spare
time. To be the most, I think is listening to
music. Vietnamese love listening to music on
music streaming websites such as Zing MP3
or Spotify because they offer a variety
of songs free of charge. Sometime we go out
or in a coffee shop, restaurant.. we can still
listening to music from anywhere. So …

- Yeah I think it can be popular in the future or

4ever bc music is the best taste of life, when
u listen to music, they can heal your soul,
sometime can share your feelings, make you
feel more positive, or can be your motivation
to improve yourself. I think we can’t live
without music.
2. What r the social benefits of hobbies?
- Having any kind of hobbies is good for people’s
social life because they can help us release our
negative stress and enjoy our lives more
meaningfully. Besides, it also helps us bring
positivity in our minds and increase our
confidence levels. And, the more confident and
positive we remain in our lives, the easier
should it get for us to relate to other people
around us. the people who have the same hobby
of singing, playing musical instruments or
playing sports can share their hobbies through
clubs. There are also lots of online communities
so if there are no other people into your hobby
where you live, you can find friends online to
share with.
3.What is the balance between life and work
life in ur country? Will there be changes in
this balance in the future?
- We know that Covid lockdown in Viet Nam
let our life too stagnant. We have been
through the covid-19 for 3 years and now is
the time to work more and more to handle
the economic crisis and develop our
country. Many people are really under great
pressure these days to work longer hours
and enjoy fewer days off mainly because
most of them are struggling to keep up
with the cost of living. Working too much
will not have enough opportunities to
relax with family and friends, everyone in
society will experience a period of mental
depression, which in turn leads to less
productive and less productive work. ->
people having a poor work-life balance
4.Do u think it can be a disadvantage to have
too much free time?
- Yes . While spending freetime can allow
people  to unwind after stressful days, but if it
is too much, in anything could do more harm
than good. The less you have to do the less
active you become and the more time you
waste. Lots of people spend too much free
time on playing games or going to parties
without realizing that they are wasting
precious time. For instance, a student spend
long hours to play game will lead to
bad academic performance at school. Or if u r
an employer and your boss give you many
things need finish in a right time but you
don’t care and just go shopping first, you will
miss the deadline and your productive work
will be low. So I think people should have a
right schedule for yourself to work better.
5.Which hobbies are the most popular with
women in your country? With men?
- women prefer things like shopping for
clothes; makeup ( on utube,tiktok.. have many
tutorial videos how to makeup , how to dress
like celebity,..
-  men tend to prefer sporting activities such as
football or basketball,
 Topic 2
6.What r some ways to show love to fml
members?
- There r so many ways to show love to fml
members in ordinary time, with the smallest
and simplest thing.. Sharing a meal with
family members can build better
relationships and create social skills. When
we eat a meal together with fml, fml members
can discuss how their day went good or bad
or discuss a topic on their minds. Another
way is spending time with your loved ones
is an excellent way to display your love for
them. We can plan family trips, movie dates,
outside activities. We all can participate in
an activity that is fun and only for the
family. Making time for family bonding can
show your loved ones the level of importance
they have in your life. Thanking a person is a
sign of respect and admiration. A simple
thank you to a family member can be a
response to many situations. we can tell them
thank you for the following reasons: being in
our life, helping us, supporting us when
they give you a compliment and when they
chose to express their feelings to us.
7.How can fmls deal with disagreements in a
healthy way?
Family disagreements can happen regularly in every
family and they strongly affect us, so it’s important
to know how to prevent and minimize the conflicts
happening in the future. I think fmls should calm
down and try to understand things from other
peoples’ perspectives and then identify what you
could do differently to help resolve the
conflict. Listening to others and having empathy is
an important way to give other family members a
chance to express their views without being
interrupted. And you should also request an
opportunity to do the same.

8.Many mothers today work and are away

from home all day. How does this affect her
and her fml?
- bc modern world products and services put extra
costs on families. Many mothers usually spend more
time at work and do not come home until late at
night, which affect…. Most of children want their
mother to take care of them and lend a sympathetic
ear. But when mother devotes a huge amount of time
to work and spend less time at home with children,
they may be lonely at home and they can feel
forgotten, which negatively affect children’s long-
term mental health. Mom and children will don’t
have the connection and day by day, they will feel
insecurity and don’t want to share their feeling or
their problems with their mom, which weaken
their family bonds. Bc the lack of care and
attention, children are likely to lose direction in
their life, they will follow to bad behaviours, the
worse is lead to criminal behaviours.
9.Would it be better for the fml to have less
money but have the mother at home?
We are in a modern world that we need to make
more money to afford to cost of living,
entertaining, families also provide their children
with all the stuffs such as video games, expensive
mobiles, foreign holidays and many more
luxuries. So mother should go out to work. When
mother goes out to work, she will feel more
confident and not need to depend on husband for
the money. Another thing is that some children
will be taught about self-awareness and
responsibility in their young age, which is
really helpful in the future when they start
their life without their mom and dad. For
example, a child whose parents give too much
concern for might be homesick or even shock
when they first going far from home like
studying in another cities; meanwhile, an
independent kid will have no difficulty in
managing their life when they have to live on
their own.
10. Why is the number of single mothers
increasing nowadays?

- (Some teenagers think that we r living in a

modern world and should be open minded,
but they don’t get enough knowledge to
consider and protect themselves, so when they
get unwated pregnant -> their boyfriend does
not want to be involved in raising the child.
- Women are married in a young age -> can’t
handle the problems will happen -> Divorce
rate increases
- morden life ) Many mothers want to have
children without getting married -> feel
independent
 Topic 3
1.In ur opinion, in what ways can governments
encourage people to use public transport?
It has been observed that people prefers to use their
private vehicles such as cars, trucks to commute
instead of using the public transport bc they can
move almost immediately and arrive at their
destinations whenever they want. So in my
opinion, to draw peoples attentions to the public
transports, government should decrease the fares of
the public transports Also, Buses and trains
should be kept clean and well managed in such a
way that will attract people.
Special considerations should be given to the
aged, children, the disabled and pregnant women.
People in this category should have decrease in
their fares. Government should hire trained person
to support for this group of people specially. I
watched a woman on TV last weekend, she was so
old and haggard. She could not even walk straight
into the bus, She had to swing her legs before she
can maintain her balance. There was no one to help
her and she was left at the station because she
couldn't move fast to join the bus.
stations should be situated closer to shopping Malls
and office for easy access so that people wont have
to trek a long distance.
2.How do you think countries can reduce
congestion : đông nghịt on the road?
The first thing that we can reduce congestion on
the road is
1: Avoid Peak Times
- Because There are certain times of the day
when more vehicles are on the roads,
usually people heading to work or school in
the mornings and people heading home in
the late afternoon evenings. You can cut
down on your time spent with your car idling
in slow traffic by driving when there are less
vehicles out on the road. Try to schedule
trips to the bank and errands such as the
grocery shopping during afternoon hours
— before or after the lunch rush — and
later in the evenings after workers get
home.
Or we can use Public Transportation
- Public transportation can get you to your
destination on time while reducing the amount
of traffic on the roads. Public transportation
drivers are continually updated on road
conditions by their dispatch so that if there is
an accident, the drivers can adjust their routes
to avoid vehicle congestion. It is also cheaper
to take public transportation and less stressful
as you don’t have to sit in traffic wondering if
you will be late for work and you can catch up
on reading, social media, or listen to some
new music.
Other Ways To Reduce Traffic
- There are certainly other ways, such as
walking or bicycling, that can also get you to
your destination.
3.How do you think transport will change in
the next ten years?
I think most of the cars will move away from

traditional fuel sources. In future, these cars may
be running on electricity or may be with
hydrogen (I'd be delighted to use a hydrogen fuel
car myself) but in order to enhance safety, the
roads will interact with these cars.
For something like airplanes, maybe capturing
the energy of a photon to make these aircrafts
move with the speed of light would be a norm.
The focus for all has to be energy efficient and
planet friendly, otherwise newer technology will not
be able to succeed. I did read some of the messages
posted and am concerned about the environment. I
believe, it all comes down to politics. The people
who have invested in the technologies of the past vs.
people who want to invest in technologies of the
future, who want to save this planet and their future
(I am all set to work towards saving this planet).
-
4.Do you think we should spend more money
on road or railways?
In my point of view, the transportation budget
should be balanced between roads and railways.
Firstly, private cars play an inevitable role in our
daily life. They are considered the easiest and most
convenient method of transportation. In addition,
they are ideal for short distances where trains cannot
be used. Furthermore, roads can reach everywhere
and link between the different facilities that people
need every day such as houses, shopping centres,
and hospitals. Consequently, constructing and
maintaining roads will solve the problem of traffic
congestion as well as boost road safety
On the other hand, the extension of the railway to
cater to larger areas of any city considerably helps in
solving the problem of traffic jams on the roads. In
addition, most modern trains are operated by
electricity ; thus they do not cause pollution in
comparison to motor vehicles. Lastly, travelling by
train saves time for the passengers since they are
faster than cars and buses. I do recommend that the
government set an organized plan to improve both
means of transport.

5.What r the most annoying bad driving habits

of other drivers in ur country (or this
country/ or compared to this country)?
- Using Your Mobile Phone While Driving
- Driving their car or.. on the road and they use
phone to check the message or check map
( grab),
- Driving With Headphones On
- Listening to music on your car radio can be
distracting enough. But with headphones at
your ears, you may be shutting out important
noises—like car horns, railroad-crossing
alarms or emergency vehicle sirens—as well
as breaking the law in some states.
- Changing Lanes Without Signaling
- In heavy traffic, using your blinker to
signal a lane change is a necessity; without it,
other drivers won’t know your intention.
When traffic is light, though, it’s easier to be
lazy about turning it on. You may or may not
be pulled over for this infraction, but good
habits begin with good communication,
regardless of conditions or laws.
- speed and not to stop at red lights. I speeded
while driving and I was punished. Driving
above the speed limit is the second biggest
cause of car accidents. No matter how skilled
and experienced a driver you are, the faster
you drive, the less control of the vehicle you
have. It’s tempting to speed up as you
approach the lights if you see green switch to
yellow, or worse, yellow becoming red. But
do not do it. It can result in horrendous
consequences in the intersection for both you
and the greenlighted driver coming from the
opposite direction. Even if you don’t cause an
accident, you run the risk of an expensive
ticket.
 Topic 4
1.What r some problems of living in big cities?
- I have moved to Ha Noi city for over 4
months to study and work, the first problem I
can see that is abt the traffic congestion. This
is my real experience. I had a class at 5h40
pm, then I decided to go out from my home at
5h20 by mortobike. That day I had to spend
almost an hour sitting in traffic on my way to
school then I got late. The traffic congestion
is leading to increasing unproductive travel
time not only causes stress and tiredness but
also lowers work productivity.
- Another drawback of living in a big city is
poor air quality caused by the rise in the
amount of toxic emissions released from
vehicles and factories . Serious air pollution
puts inhabitants of cities at a higher risk of
lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses.
2.Do u think it is better 4 children to grow up
in the city or the countryside?
- In my point of view, growing up in a big city
contributes far better to a child than growing in the
countryside.
- Growing up in a big city means the children get a
better chance to receive excellent education. As
we know, most of the high quality schools locate
in big cities, and living there can give children a
easier to access to. As a result, all children’s
talents and passions can be easier to
develop .City will usually offer better
opportunities for their talent’s development.
While in the countryside, we cannot sure that the
quality of the education given there is up to
date, and poor education surely will weaken the
capability of competing in the future society.
Besides all of above statements, I think that living
in a big city has more fun, cause you always have
something interesting at hand to do. Visiting
museums and art galleries will entitle children
eyes to appreciate the heritages passed down to
us, all kinds of society activities can help them to
foster a community sense. While living in the
countryside is always referred as “the frog at the
bottom of a well, all you can see is the little
piece of sky formed by the rims of the well”.

3.Why do u think some people move to the

countryside when they retire?
I see that Many people who are close to their
retirement want to move to the countryside to enjoy
the rest of their life. t is widely believe that life in
the rural areas are more peaceful than that in the
city.
they can enjoy the beautiful landscape and rural
peacefulness which help to help ease many mental
health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
-the fresh and pure air of the natural
environment certainly gives them good health.
everyday exercise that gives you the energy to
carry out everything you want to achieve in your
retirement, and keeping you feeling great to fight
off illnesses
-only in the countryside can they enjoy such
interesting hobbies as fishing, boating and
gardening.
-above all, they love the honesty and kindness of
country people, who are always good neighbours.
-and it is true that people in the countryside live
longer than those in the city . not many of them
suffer from heart diseases and mental troubles,
which are rather common among elderly urban
people.
-like many other old people my parents are living in
there native village. they enjoy their happy life
there.

4.How r city people and country people

different?
- City people don't share blood relations with
their neighbors which is why they are less
bound to help them. While in countryside, it's
mostly a set of brothers who expanded their
family into a village, which brings the
responsibility to help and stay together.
- A person with “good” set of parents or
family is often taken as a “good” person.
We all judge others by family background,
but in cities, no one knows about the
background. Owning to the lack of
history's knowledge, the chances of trusting
her/him is less.
- City serves as a safe place for those who
are running from their past, or the
mistakes(crime, may be) made in their past.
This makes city people look at each-other
with suspicion.

- In cities, children are raised to be cunning.

Ambitiousness is fed to them, which is why
they see others as 'competitors'. They are
less bothered about being nice and more
concerned about winning at any cost.

5.What do u think r the world’s three greatest

cities and why?
 Topic 5
1.What personal qualities does a person need to
be a good boss?
I believe honesty is the most important thing that
is required out of a boss. It is very important for a
boss  to be able to put down the real situation in
front of the team mates so that the situation can be
dealt as a team. Also, communication,
commitment and confidence are the three C’s
required out of a boss. And in the end, the patience
and the will power to be able to look ahead with
great positivity, to endure failures is what is required
of a leader.
2.Would u prefer to work for an organization
or be self- employed?
I think It is better to be self-employed than working
for an organization. Self-employment offers
freedom and more spaces for developing a
business and fulfilling dreams.
spending quality time, taking vacations and
enjoying other social activities of life. I don’t need
to stay in an office from 9 to 5 and is not forced to
work whenever the superior officer feels like.
They have more passion for work, can plan freely
and invest according to their capability. Unlike
paid employee, they are not fired anytime the
company wants to or stay overnight just to meet a
deadline. Though they have to take risks and
accept challenges, being self-employed can help
them to get more practical benefits, and more
responsibilities
3.What are the advantages and disadvantages
of working from home, rather than going to
an office?
Working from home is a lot more comfortable for
lots of people. Employees can save a great deal of
time and money since they do not have to travel
so often, which means people will have more
time for work and for themselves, too. Less
travelling will also help reduce traffice jam and
pollutants to our environment. Besides, working
at home does not mean staying inside all day
long, people can choose to work in their garden or
backyard, wherever makes them feel convenient to
work. Moreover, employees are under less
stresses since they get to decide when to work
and when to take rest. These things will help
giving out better perfomance to tasks.

There are still some disadvantages that home-

working could bring. For instance, working from
personal space will reduce direct interactions
among colleagues. But the problem is solved
thanks to the Internet. As for now, people from
around the globe can easily contact and work
with others from distances. Another drawback is
that some people may get distracted from work by
external factors. This requires employees to be
highly awared of what they should and should not
do for their paid jobs.
4.How has the Internet changed studying?
5.If u could own ur own business, what would it
be? Explain ur reason.
If I have a chance, I will start a recording studio
business. I’m really keen on producing music .I have
recorded my songs and I have released those on
youtube. I think Recording Studio Business's
typically involve a much greater degree of
movement than other lines of work. Most days, you
will spend your day walking, running errands for
your business, and performing a multitude of tasks.
This can have a positive impact on energy levels
and your overall health. you get to put your
energy into something you are truly passionate
about! You'll find yourself devoting as much time
and energy as possible into the business to make
it successful. A thing that I love best is that I can
have more chance to work with many artist even
famous artist on music, so I can learn a lot of new
things about them, abt their music, which
improve my skills…
Topic 6
1.It is considered important in your country to
learn foreign languages?
Learning a foreign language open up employment
opportunities. For businesses, it is essential to
develop and sustain a strong footing in the global
economy. It is better achievable if they can
understand the psychology and the language of their
foreign clients. Most companies therefore, look for
candidates with foreign language skills. If you are
already working, knowing a foreign language may
lead to special recognitions or promotions. As an
employer, it will help encourage staff performance,
improve customer services, and increase revenue for
your company. It will open up more avenus before
you. The more language you know, the better you
can express yourself.
2.What, in your opinion is the best way to learn
a language?
- Practice Speaking. Use the power of social
networking/social media to make friends from
other countries, where you'll have the
opportunity to speak and perfect the language
you want to learn.
If it is possible and you have time during your
day, you can also write and study grammar, as
it will be of great importance in your future as
a multilingual..
- Speaking with natives and/or consuming their
main form of entertainment (telenovelas,
radio, etc…) in their language is optimal.
Taking a class also helps distinguish between
in/formal wording / grammar.
3.Why are some people seemingly better at
learning languages than others?
Some people are seemingly better at studying and
learning languages than others because they may
find it easier to understand. These people have good
memory power, and they’re keen and persistent in
learning a new language. Or being bilingual from
ayoung age certainly helps because the more
languages you speak, the more easily you
acquire a new one. Another major factor is
motivation: two people can study the same
materials for the same number of hours but the
person who is more motivated will learn
more and remember better what they’ve learnt.
it depends upon the intellect of a person. Some
persons are knowledgeable because they have good
schooling and are fully aware of English grammar
and basic concepts. So they learn fast. While others,
who have not learnt alien language in their initial
years and incompetent teachers didn’t make any
effort to improve their language in their early years.
These factors are responsible for making them
learning any language slowly.
4.Do you think the culture of English-speaking
countries, as well as the English language,
dominate the world?
The rise of the Internet has certainly increased the
dominance of English, and therefore
also the spread of English and American ways of
seeing the world. I think we are all
expected to conform. Also, the majority of young
people in my country like to watch
American films and l isten to American music:
it’s considered trendy to do so. So, yes, I
would definitely say that the culture of English-
speaking countries holds much sway all
over the world.
I can say English is a global language and
it's spoken by a wide range of people. If
you know English, then you can travel all
over the world that's absolutely true
from my point of view. I think that English
is nowadays the dominant language in the
world, and has been improving during all
the 20th century. But I'm not sure that this
language will continue to keep its rank,
for few reasons:
- the economic development of China will
become also cultural when this country
will be the first economy (in a few decades
maybe)of the world.

5.Why do you think people feel it is important

to continue speaking their local language?
- Because it is their original language that their
ancestors put effort through many centuries to
create and preserve. Maintaining their local
language is critical to your identity and
contributes to a positive self-concept, also
helps you learn how to value, respect their
culture and heritage.
 TOPIC 7
1.Do you think that life would be dull without
stress?
A life without stress is a life without care. No care
about family or friends or others. No care about your
environment. No care for yourself. All of which is
evolutionarily unfavorable. Without stress, life
would be dull and unexciting. Stress adds flavor,
challenge, and opportunity to life. So we have
stress!
2.In what ways does stress affect our health and
life?
Too much emotional stress can cause lower work
productivity or physical illness such as high blood
pressure, ulcers, or even heart disease; physical
stress from work or exercise is not likely to cause
such ailments. Stress may also cause disease, either
because of changes in your body or the overeating,
smoking, and other bad habits people use to cope
with stress.
3.Some people blame modern life for the
increasing amount of stress we suffer. What is
your point of view?
Today's society has been developing quickly, mass
medias such as Internet, telephone, email, social
network (Facebook, Twitter, Zing me and so on) are
more and more popular, and more international
inventions make everybody over all the world come
closer together. The tendency of globalization is
certain. This has brought many benefits for
people both physical and mental. However, there
are too many social relationships and things to
tackle everyday such as job, finance, looking after
their children, studying and so on. While ability of
people is limited. They can not work or stand too
many tasks in the same time. Therefore, many
people are sick, especially high blood pressure, heart
disease, physical weakness, depression. Some of
them try to cope with stress by using acohol,
eating too much, not sleep… Even among some
people were died of these diseases. In fact, there
were also some people who killed themselves.
4.Do you think people who exercise are happier
than who don’t?
It's clear that exercise has health benefits both
physical and mental The quality of your sleep as
well as your immune system improves with
exercise which improves your happiness.
--Physical activity leads to changes in your brain,
such as increased blood flow and the creation of
new neural pathways. Hormones such as
endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and
testosterone are also released in response to
increased physical activity, which directly
improves your happiness level.
--When you don't feel good about your body or
how you look, it's all too easy to have low self-
esteem. Exercise and good shape will make you
happy about yourself with high self-esteem.
So exercise does make you feel more confident,
energized, and calm — you’ll be a healthier and
happier person for life. However It is not the only
reason why happy people are happy and sad
people are sad. Not to mention; It could be that
happy people are more likely to take up exercise and
continue with it than people who feel sad.

5.What kind of exercise do you think is best?

BODYCOMBAT is an exercise class that lets you
punch and kick your way towards your fitness goals.
Not only is it a great whole-body workout for cardio
fitness, but it’s also superb for burning fat, releasing
stress and improving your co-ordination. The
BODYCOMBAT workout combines moves from
Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Muay Thai and Kung
Fu;, you won’t need any martial arts experience to
enjoy all the benefits of BODYCOMBAT. The
expert instructor will take you though each and every
move beforehand, which will include hooks, jabs,
upper cuts, kicks and high knees as well. I usually
watch body combat on youtube and follow their
movement of expert instructor with the rythym of
the music,  get you fit, fast and strong – and
leave you feeling empowered.
