Assignment #3 - March 27

1) Derive an equivalent circuit model for a 3-coil transformer and represent it using Simulink blocks. Identify experimental tests needed to determine the transformer parameters. 2) Derive inductance relationships for a 2-phase salient pole synchronous machine and modify them for a uniform air-gap machine. Write voltage equations and derive an expression for torque. 3) Write voltage equations for a 3-phase circuit with uncoupled phases of equal resistances, inductances and capacitances in an arbitrary reference frame. Plot current responses in rotating and stationary frames for series and parallel connections.

Assignment #3 based on the reference book

(Analysis of Electric Machinery and Drive Systems)

Problem 1: Derivation of an equivalent electric model of a magnetically coupled circuit

Considering Fig. 1.2-1 of Chapter 1, a third wound coil is added to the ferromagnetic core. The
resistance is 𝑟3 and le leakage and magnetizing inductances are 𝐿𝑙3 and 𝐿𝑚3 , respectively. The
coil is wound so that positive current (𝑖3 ) produces ∅𝑚3 in the opposite direction as ∅𝑚1 and
∅𝑚2 .

1. Derive the T equivalent circuit for this three-winding transformer.

2. Draw an equivalent model using the Simulink block set.
3. Indicate procedures or steps needed for identifying the parameters of this three-coil
transformer through experimental tests.

Problem 2: Analysis of an elementary electric machine

An elementary 2-pole, 2-phase salient pole synchronous machine is shown in Fig. 2. The winding
inductance may be expressed as:
𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑎𝑠 = 𝐿𝑙𝑠 + 𝐿𝐴 − 𝐿𝐵 cos(2𝜃𝑟 )
𝐿𝑏𝑠𝑏𝑠 = 𝐿𝑠 + 𝐿𝐴 + 𝐿𝐵 cos(2𝜃𝑟 )
𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑏𝑠 = −𝐿𝐵 sin 2𝜃𝑟
𝐿𝑓𝑑𝑓𝑑 = 𝐿𝑙𝑓𝑑 + 𝐿𝑚𝑓𝑑
𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑓𝑑 = 𝐿𝑠𝑓𝑑 sin 𝜃𝑟
𝐿𝑏𝑠𝑓𝑑 = −𝐿𝑠𝑓𝑑 cos 𝜃𝑟
1. Verify the above relationships and give expressions for the coefficients 𝐿𝐴 , 𝐿𝐵 , 𝐿𝑚𝑓𝑑 and
𝐿𝑠𝑓𝑑 similar in form to those given for a 3-phase machine. Modify these inductance
relationships so that they will describe a 2-phase uniform air-gap synchronous machine.
2. Write the voltage equations for elementary 2-pole, 2-phase, salient-pole synchronous
machine shown in Fig. 2 and derive the expression for torque 𝑇𝑒 (𝑖𝑎𝑠 , 𝑖𝑏𝑠 , 𝑖𝑓𝑑 , 𝜃𝑟 ).

Problem 3: Reference-Frame Theory

The phases of a 3-phase circuit consist of equal resistances, equal inductances, and equal capacitances
connected in series. These phases are not coupled.

1. Write the voltage equations in arbitrary reference frame and draw the equivalent circuit.
2. For chosen parameters plot the current response in both rotating and stationary frames
3. Repeat the 1 and 2 for the circuit elements in each phase connected in parallel.
