FE Perimeters Handling

The document discusses new capabilities in ANSA 18 for handling finite element (FE) perimeters. Key points include: 1) FE perimeters are now automatically generated during meshing or recognized on existing meshes and stored in the database for improved control and editing. 2) Perimeters can be manually edited by adding, removing, or modifying perimeter nodes and edges. 3) Mesh improvement functions can now utilize FE perimeters to refine the mesh while keeping perimeter nodes fixed. 4) The enhanced perimeter functionality facilitates FE mesh handling similar to geometric mesh handling.

Introduction

ANSA version 18 provides an enhanced approach on FE handling flexibility and control with improved
recognition of Perimeters.

This new capability greatly facilitates FE mesh handling which comes closer to that of the Geometric
mesh.

Main advantages:
• All recognized and/or defined FE perimeters are saved in the database
• Complete control and refinement over the definition of the perimeters thanks to manual editing
from the user
• Meshing functions can now be used for mesh improvements utilizing the FE Perimeters.
• Macro Area selection assistant can now be utilized

FE Perimeters generation

Automatically, with the creation of FE Mesh

a) By releasing mesh from Geometry with MESH>Elements>Release.
In this case Perimeters are derived from the geometric ones.

b) When applying procedures that create mesh (TOPO>Faces>Mid.Surface [Casting],

MESH>Elements>Wrap [Variable Length] )

FE Perimeters generation

FE Perimeters recognized on existing FE mesh

In case of existing FE mesh without perimeters, from MESH>Perimeters>FE Perimeters

FE Perimeters function provides options to

create, edit or erase FE Perimeters.

FE Perimeters functionality

FE Perimeters recognition
Applying MESH>Perimeters>FE Perimeters [Recognize] will
recognize FE Perimeters on all unrecognized visible parts.

! Note: Even if only section of a Part is visible, recognition

will be applied on the whole Part.

Perimeters recognition is affected by options in:

Mesh Parameters > Perimeters > FE Perimeters recognition

4 FE Perimeters recognition
algorithms are available

From the four algorithms, Angle was used in previous versions, while now, Generic,
STL and CFD are provided, optimized for the respective type of FE model.

FE Perimeters functionality

FE Perimeters editing (1)

FE Perimeters can be edited through the Edit sub-function:

! Note: Each time Edit is selected, Recognize is applied again, affecting

unrecognized visible parts at that moment.

Recognition parameters are synchronized with the ones

in the Mesh Parameters 1 and Feature Manager 2

Subsequent
recognitions can be
1
applied at will
! Note: In combination with the direct access to
the parameters, tuning parameters is hastened. 2

Activate to keep already defined perimeters

unaffected by subsequent Recognition runs!

FE Perimeters can be edited through the Edit sub-function:

Perimeter Nodes on FE Perimeters can be also edited:

Add Perimeter Nodes by selecting element nodes on FE Perimeters…

…or remove Perimeter Nodes by deselecting them

! Tip: Perimeter Nodes

remain fixed during
mesh improvement
procedures.
Refer to ‘Working with FE Perimeters’ for an example

Clearing FE Perimeters
Remove FE Perimeters completely from parts with Clear sub-option

! Note: Clear will be applied only on visible Parts, even if only section
of a Part is visible.

! Note: Clear removes any Features that may had been identified in
the Feature Manager.

affect only Geometric mesh.

Functions that, now, affect FE Mesh: ! Note: Any changes of the FE Perimeters due to
functions application, are kept in the DB and
eventually saved!
