Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to apply to the audit assistant graduate programme at RSM in London. Currently, I attend the University
of Leeds where I am in my third year of the BEng Chemical & Process Engineering programme. Although my degree
is not directly accounting-related, several parallels can be drawn from the skills that are developed throughout the
course. These skills include being proficient with numbers, detail oriented, highly analytical, and personable; all traits
required to be successful in audit. The direct application of these skills can be seen in previously completed projects,
involving myself conducting in-depth research on complex engineering topics and compiling the information in a
scientific report where I perform detailed analysis and form conclusions.
Working in a family restaurant from a young age meant that I was able to learn the fundamentals working in a
business. I grew up caring for my family and caring for the business, and I quickly came to understand that every
action I took mattered greatly as I was concerned for the success of the business, which I wanted to do well. And this
became my approach to all work I partook in, whoever I work with or for; I learned to care deeply about the job I do
and the impact I have on others, the business, and its customers. My experience working in hospitality has also
allowed me to develop and demonstrate excellent customer service skills and the ability to be a valued team member.
A core value of RSM which resonates with me is integrity; working with integrity means doing what is right over
what is ‘easy’ and remaining honest, which maintains the integrity of not only the employee but the employee's firm
as well. I believe the integrity of a business is of the utmost importance for its reputation in developing trust with both
the existing client stakeholders, shareholders and just as importantly, an infallible reputation across the market that
will be key in securing new work. Working with integrity resonates with me through my education in chemical
engineering and my employment in the hospitality sector. The right thing may not always be the easiest available
option and therefore it takes genuine desire and effort to uphold this value, which in turn truly displays one’s
character; doing the right thing is vital for progression for the business and the individual. I understand that the safety
and wellbeing of end consumers and employees (stakeholders) are of fundamental importance, whether I am designing
a product and its production plant or working in a kitchen. Ensuring standards are met and regulations are complied
with are crucial parts of my approach to work.
As a person with an ethnic background, the inclusivity and diversity that RSM strive to uphold in its workplace is
extremely appealing to me. I look forward to working at a firm which ‘focuses on fostering a healthy culture and a
supportive environment’.
This opportunity would allow me to gain invaluable experience and kickstart a long career at one of the world’s top
accounting firms, being named an ‘outstanding organisation to work for’ by Best Companies. The idea of working
alongside RSM’s impressive clients such as FTSE 300 companies, major multinationals and leading charities is
motivating and suits my personal ambitions.
The core mission of RSM is a testament to my own beliefs, where a successful business requires a great team with
exceptional client service, operational excellence, integrity, fairness, responsibility, and a winning culture. This allows
progression in an ever-changing climate. Thank you for the opportunity.
Yours faithfully,
Callum Chau
