DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE VI

Quarter 2 MELC 6

Prepared by: Juvelyn P. Cornell

Date: March 06-10

Subject Area: SCIENCE
Grade Level: Grade 6

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of 45 minutes the learners will able to;

a. Describe an ecosystem;
b. Identify the living and non-living components of an ecosystem; (S6MT-IIi-j-6)
c. Distinguish the kind of ecosystem in the environment;
d. Explain the importance of an ecosystem

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: ECOSYSTEM
Reference: Learners’ Materials/LAS: Quarter 2- MELC –6
Science 6 Learners Material, pages 124-128
Value Focus: Caring for the Ecosystem
Materials: power point, laptop, visual aids, pictures of different types of ecosystems,
chart

III. PROCEDURE:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
a. Prayer All are praying…..
Everybody are requested to stand and
let us pray.
b. Checking of Attendance None Teacher.
Who are absent today?
c. Review
As a recall, what was the topic that we One of the student will answer.
discuss last meeting? Teacher our last topic was about
“deforestation”.
Very good! Let’s give her/him a round
of applause.
d. Motivation
(The teacher posted the pictures of
rainforest, living things and non -living
things on the board).

Posted on the board are pictures. Who The picture that posted on the board are
can explain if what are these pictures? examples of rainforest, desert, mangrove,
living and non- living things.
Activity

Before we start our lesson, let us first

know the meaning of some unfamiliar
words that we may encounter.
1. What is ecology? Ecology is the relationships b/w organism and
their environment.
Example: all animals and plants. Etc…

2. What are organisms? Organisms are plants, animals and other tiny
living things that may not visible to the naked
eye.
Example: fungus, yeast, bacteria etc…

3. What is a habitat? Habitat is the part of the ecosystem where

organism lives.
Example: oceans, coral reefs, dessert, trees
etc..

e. Lesson Proper

a. Presentation of the Lesson

As you can see on the board, there is a word posted “ECOSYSTEM”
here, everybody please read the word
“ECOSYSTEM”

Now, what comes in to your mind when you hear Learners will answer: plants, animals, living
the word ECOSYSTEM? Give me an example. and non-living things etc…
Very good!

Now, let’s put it altogether what is ecosystem? ECOSYSTEM is a specific place where living
(The teacher will guide the learners in answering things interact with non-living things. It comes
the question). from the word ecological system or ecology
from the greek word which means “HOME”.

Analysis

Try to recall of what do you see in a river or sea or The learners will answer
forest (or any ecosystem existing in the (cat, dog, humans, chickens, frogs, snakes, fish,
community)? ants, garbage, fish ponds grass land, etc)…

Well done!

There are two components of the ecosystem: Learners are listening……

1.
1.
1.
1.
1.
Biotic Factors
2. Abiotic Factors

Biotic Factors are all organisms that live in Plants, animals, fish, shark, cat, humans, lizard,
ecosystem or living things in short. mouse, birds, etc…..

Give me an example of biotic factors…

Very good! Let’s give him/her a BIG CLAP for all of

us!
(Plants, animals, humans, fish ect.. are examples of
biotic factors).

Abiotic Factors are all the non-living components of

an ecosystem.
Ex. Rock, light intensity, moisture, chemicals, Sunlight, air, water, soil, temperature,
humidity, air, gases etc.. minerals, and others.

Can you please give me some example of abiotic

factors?

Excellent! Let’s give him/her a 3 big clap and 3 big

stamp!

There are two kinds of an ecosystem which is small

and big ecosystem, some lived in the sea, some
lived on land.

Example of small ecosystem are, decaying tree

trunk, under a rock, rotten log and etc,. while a big
ecosystem – ocean, forest etc.

Abstraction
Learners are listening….
Alright! An ecosystem refers to a practical unit of
nature where living organisms act together among
themselves and with the surrounding physical
environment.

The interaction of the Biotic and abiotic

components of the ecosystem brings about the
continuous cycle of material and energy in the
ecosystem.
Both biotic and abiotic factors are crucial
components to ecosystems. For example, imagine a
pond. The plant and animals living there respond to
abiotic factors such as the temperature, the water’s
oxygen content, and the pH level. The living things
also interact with other biotic elements of their
ecosystem. They may depend on fish for energy as
their prey, bacteria to create important compounds
that they cannot create themselves, and plants and
algae provide the pond a constant supply of
oxygen.

Ecosystems are important because they provide

food, air, and shelter for living things, as well as
help maintain a balance in nature.

Generalization

Let’s sum up what we have discussed; I have here a

graphic organizer. All you need to do is to level the
details for each box. Now anyone who can go to
the board and level?

Good job!

Now, who can tell us the summary of our lesson for ECOSYSTEM is made up of living and non-living
today with the help of graphic organizer? things interacting with each other. And its
derived from the greek word called HOME.
And It can be small or big ecosystem which
some lived in land and lived in sea.

Application

Since we are done discussing about the Students were being grouped according to
ECOSYSTEM. This time I will group you according to their skills with the consideration of their
your interest. Either you (sing, dance, drama, hip multiple intelligence.
hop etc.) Your task is to illustrate an action you are
applying in your daily life that you recommend to
others in order to prevent harm to the ecosystem.
You can do this through singing, drawing, drama
etc..

I will give you 5 minutes prepare and present to the

class.

Did you get it?

You may now start the tasks given to you.

IV. Evaluation
A. Identify if what kind of ecosystem is given below. Put the word SMALL if the kind of
ecosystem is small and BIG if the kind of ecosystem is Big on the space provided.

1. Sea 6. mangroves
2. rotten log 7. A pond
3. grassland 8. A fern
4. forest 9. A plant
5. coral reefs 10. A dessert

B. Describe an ecosystem in your own understanding. (5 pts.).

V. Assignment

Give the example of biotic and abiotic component in Venn Diagram.
