Assign 2

This document provides instructions for Assignment No. 2 in the course Principles of Steel Design. It instructs students to show their work, include units, round final answers to two decimal places, underline answers, and number pages and problems. It then presents two practice design problems: calculating the net width of a bolted connection given bolt diameters and positions, and determining the ultimate tensile force the connection can carry.

CE322-18 PRINCIPLES OF STEEL DESIGN – ASSIGNMENT NO.

STUDENT NAME: _______________________________ DATE: ______________

STUDENT NUMBER: ____________________________

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use five (5) decimal places for your calculations but record your final answer/s in two (2) decimal
places. Each problem should be written on a new sheet of paper. The following ground rules will
apply in the grading of problem sets. Points will be deducted for each of the following items:

• No sketches where sketches are necessary or desirable as instructed.

• No units where units are applicable.
• Not rounding-off your final answers to an appropriate decimal place.
• Not underlining/boxing your final answers.
• Not numbering each page and each problem.

1. 4 – 22mm diameter bolts are used in a staggered connection as shown in the figure. Calculate
the value of “x” such that the net width in chain A-B-C-D is equal to the net width of the chain
A-B-D. What is the critical net area in mm2?

50 B

70 C Pu 200

2. From the preceding problem, determine the ultimate tensile force Pu that the bolted connection
could carry against tensile rupture in the net section and yielding in the gross section. Use
A50 steel and LRFD.
