YUSI AssignmentModule7

1. The bank president was concerned about differences in sick leave usage across branches. An analysis of variance found a significant difference in the mean number of sick leave days taken across the four branches. This suggests monitoring sick leave usage at each branch. 2. A study examined daily coffee consumption across four regions. An analysis of variance found no significant difference in mean daily coffee consumption between the regions. The researcher should measure frequency and timing of coffee intake for a more meaningful conclusion.

Read, understand, and analyze the problems carefully. Work on the problem and
follow the step by step procedures in solving it – from the null hypothesis to the
recommendation. Round off to two decimal places.
1. A rural bank has four branches in a certain city. The bank president was anxious
that employees were taking advantage of the bank’s substantial sick leave policy;
and he alleged that it might be associated with the branch where employees work.
He requested each branch manager to submit the records of sick leave (in days)
availed of randomly select employees the previous year. The table below shows the
results. At a .01 alpha, is there significant difference on the mean number of sick
leave availed of employees from the four branches?

Branch Branch Branch Branch

Mean

Null Hypothesis
There is no significant difference on the mean number of sick leave availed of
employees from the four branches

Alternative Hypothesis
There is a significant difference on the mean number of sick leave availed of
employees from the four branches
Level of significance: 0.01

Degree of freedom:
k-1 4-1 3
= =
N -k 18 - 4 14

Critical F Value: 5.56

Decision Rule:
Reject the null hypothesis if F > 5.56; otherwise, do not reject the null hypothesis.

Computations:
SSA = ∑knj (xbarj - grand mean) ²
4 (13.75 - 12.11)² + 5 (10.20 - 12.11)² + 5 (16 - 12.11)²
+ 4 (8.5 - 12.11)²
= 156.79

(n1 - 1) (S²1) + (n2 - 1) (S²2) + (n3 - 1) (S²3) + (n4 - 1)

SSW = (S²4)
= 3 (12.25) + 4 (0.7) + 4 (2.5) + 3 (1.67)
= 54.56

SST = SSA + SSW

= 156.79 + 54.56
= 211.35

SSA 156.79 156.79

MSA = = = = 52.26
k-1 (4 - 1) 3

SSW 54.56 54.56

MSW = = = = 3.90
N-k (18 - 4) 14

MSA 52.26
F = = = 13.41
MSW 3.90

Conclusion:
Reject the null hypothesis, 13.41 > 5.56; which means that there is a significant
difference on the mean number of sick leave availed of employees from the four
branches.

Recommendation:
Sick leave is given to employees in order to have a rest whenrever they are
feeling unwell, but as seen in the problem of the bank, employees sometimes take
advantage of this leave. As we computed the results, we saw that there are differences
in the mean average days of leave per branch. I can recommend that the general
manager should suggest branching managers that they should be monitoring their
employees' leave. Because this could eventually affect the branch and performance of
the bank branch as a whole.

2. A student researcher studied the daily coffee consumptions (in ounces) of people
from Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon. The table next page shows the
summary results. At a .05 alpha, is there significant difference on the mean daily
coffee consumptions of the people from the four places?

Cavite Laguna Batangas Quezon

Sample 30 25 45 24

Mean 3.7 3.4 4.0 3.5

Variance 4.2 4.1 3.9 3.3

Grand Mean 3.65

Null hypothesis:
There is no significant difference on the mean daily coffee consumptions of the
people from the four places.
Alternative Hypothesis:
There is a significant difference on the mean daily coffee consumptions of the
people from the four places.
Level of Significance: 0.05
Degree of Freedom:
k-1 4-1 3
= =
N-k 124 - 4 120

Critical F Value: 2.68

Decision Rule:
Reject the null hypothesis if F > 2.68; otherwise, do not reject the null hypothesis.
Computations:
SSA = ∑knj (xbarj - grand mean) ²
30 (3.7 - 3.65)² + 25 (3.4 - 3.65)² + 45 (4 - 3.65)² + 24
= (3.5 - 3.65)²

(n1 - 1) (S²1) + (n2 - 1) (S²2) +

SSW = (n3 - 1) (S²3) + (n4 - 1) (S²4)
29(4.2) + 24(4.1) + 44(3.9) +
= 23(3.3)
= 467.7

SST = SSA + SSW

= 7.69 + 467.7
= 475.39

SSA 7.69 7.69

MSA = = = = 2.56
k-1 (4 - 1) 3

SSW 467.7 467.7

MSW = = (124 - = = 3.90
N-k 4) 120

MSA 2.56
F = = = 0.66
MSW 3.90

Conclusion:
Do not reject the null hypothesis, 0.66 > 2.68; which means that there is no
significant difference on the mean daily coffee consumptions of the people from the four
places.
Recommendation:
The result shows that there is no difference in coffee intake of people from
different places. I think this is because those people are only living in the same country,
having the same environment and weather. I may suggest that for the research to be
feasible and specific, the researcher should also measure the frequency and time of
coffee intake of his chosen samples. So that he can come up with a more specific and
meaningful conclusion.
