LECTURER:
1.0 TITLE :
Valve timing (4 stroke)

2.0 OBJECTIVES :
1. To understand the valve actuation with ease of display.
2. To learn how the valve timing works.
3. Get knowledge about valve timing of 4-stroke reciprocating engine.
4. To learn the purpose of valve timing.
3.0 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES :
3.1 Perform the experiments correctly according to the lab sheet and recognize the methods
used in the experiments
3.2 Prepare a proper technical report based on data from experiments
3.3 Demonstrate the ability to work in team to complete assigned task.

4.0 INTRODUCTION :

The valve timing is the precise timing of the opening and closing of the valves. In four-stroke
cycle engine, the valve timing is controlled by the camshaft. It can be varied during engine operation by
variable valve timing. It is also affected by the adjustment of the valve mechanism. The valve timing
diagram comprises of a 360 degree figure which represents the movement of the piston from TDC to BDC
in all the strokes of the engine cycle, Which is measured in degrees and the opening and closing of the
valves is controlled according to these degrees. The normal engine completes around 100000 cycles per
minute, as we know there are number of processes involve in a single cycle (from the intake of the air-fuel
mixture to the exhaust of the combustion residual) of a internal which makes it necessary to be equipped
with an effective system that can enable

5.0 APPARATUS :
1. Single cylinder 4-stroke ignition engine
2. Dial indicator
3. magnetic base
4. masking tape
5. scientific calculator

6.0 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS :

1. Wear a lab coat and safety shoes during the experiment.
2. Extremely cautious when using a knife.
3. Be careful with the rotating part.
7.0 PROCEDURES :
1. Remove the flywheel cover and the cylinder head to expose the flywheel and the valve.
2. Attach masking tape around the flywheel.
3. Observe the position of piston in the selected cylinder as flywheel to turned over by using a
suitable datum on the cylinder block, mark TDC and BDC on the masking tape.
4. Identify the inlet and exhaust valve and determine the direction of rotation of the engine.
5. The dial indicator with magnetic base the top of the block is set up. The shaft of the indicator
should rest on the appropriate valve whose opening and closing to be observed.
6. The flywheel clockwise slowly turned by hand and proceed to mark on the masking tape the point
in the circle when inlet valve opens, inlet valve closes, exhaust valve opens and exhaust valve
closes respectively.
7. Remove the masking tape and measure the valve leads and lags.
8. The valve timing diagram is constructed.

8.0 DATA / RESULTS / CALCULATION :

length of masking tape (l) : mm.
length from inlet valve open (IVO) to inlet valve close (IVC) (a) : mm.
length from inlet valve close (IVC) to ignition time (IG) (b) : mm.
length from ignition time (IG) to exhaust valve open (EVO) (c) : mm.
length from exhaust valve open (EVO) to exhaust valve close (EVC) (e) : mm.
length from inlet valve open (IVO) to exhaust valve close (EVO) (d) : mm.

Calculate the valves duration for:

a) induction stroke

b) compression stroke

c) power stroke
d) exhaust stroke

e) overlap

9.0 DISCUSSIONS :
Based on the experiment, the valve timing is the regulation of the points in the cycle at which the
valves are open and close. I find that valve timing diagram is a graphical represent of the exact moments,
in the sequence of operation at which two valves, inlet and exhaust valves open and close as well as the
firing of the fuel. It is generally expressed in terms of angular position of the crankshaft. In order for the
intake and exhaust to fulfill their function, they are opened and closed at specific points in the engine
cycle.

9. CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, we know that a valve timing is representation of the opening and closing of the intake
and exhaust valve of the engine. There is 4-stroke engine the cycle completes in 4-strokes that are
suction, compression, expansion and exhaust. In addition, I learned how to make the valve timing
diagram and how to accurately the valves timing duration, measured in degrees and the valves is
controlled according to these degree. We learn the propuse of the valve overlap. The purpose of the
overlap is to flush the exhaust gasses using fresh air. When both valves are open together it will allow
fresh air to enter and then push the exhaust gas so that in the next cycle, the fresh air content become
more maximal.
