Practical-5 (Compressed Air Requirement Calculations and System Design-1

This document outlines the steps to properly size an air compressor system to meet the needs of a facility. It involves calculating the maximum air requirements of all machines and tools based on factors like pressure and flow. The compressor and downstream equipment are then selected and laid out in a centralized compressor room. Piping and accessories connect the system. Tests are run to observe temperature and humidity in the compressor room under different ventilation conditions. The conclusion verifies if the calculated air supply can meet the peak demand of all equipment accounting for pressure losses in the piping.

Experiment Title:
Compressed air requirement calculations and system design

Objective:
To identify the compressor system requirements as per the needs of machine and
planning of compressor room.

Professional Advice:
Calculation for requirement of compressed air is a critical topic as it has to be done very
carefully. Peak requirement of compressed air in all machines of an industry/site as well
air to be used for other purposes (i.e. airguns and other pneumatic tools) has been
calculated in terms of pressure, flow and temperature. Miscalculations can affect the
working of machinery and pneumatic tool or cause the energy waste.

Safety Precaution:
• Location of compressor room should be located at center of industry/workplace so
that transmission of compressed air on all sides of compressors should be similar.
• While making calculations, do consider the pressure drop within the piping while
transmission of compressed air.

Theory:
Book topics:
Chapter 3: How to Select a Compressor

Procedure:
1. Identify all compressors and machines/equipment placed in university with
following specifications:
a. Name of brand & type of compressor
b. Attributes of output air (pressure, flow, temperature etc.)
c. Type of downstream equipment (dryers, filters etc.)
d. Name & type of machine/equipment using compressed air
e. Specifications of compressed air required for those machine/equipment
(pressure, flow, temperature etc.)
2. Calculate the maximum required compressed air within the system considering
machine & tools and equipment.
3. Make the selection of compressor and downstream equipment as per following
requirement of machine/equipment:
a. Flow Requirement
b. Pressure Requirement
c. Dew Point Temperature Requirement
4. Make a layout of compressor room (recommended at a centralized location of
factory/work area)
5. Place the equipment at designated locations
6. Connect the equipment with piping and relevant accessories

Calculations and Observations:

• Observe the temperature humidity readings in compressor room when ventilation
and cooling fan is active.
• Change the compressor room conditions (by closing ventilation and cooling fan)
and take the readings again.

Conclusion:
Verify if the calculated air will fulfil the peak requirement of all machines/equipment (when
running all at once) while considering the pressure drop in piping?
