CLINICAL ROTATION PLAN

INTRODUCTION:

The school should select the clinical fields for the purpose of providing
clinical practice at the outset of the program. The learning situations, where
the students are under take nursing activities.

DEFINITION:

In nursing education-rotation refers to regular successive and recurrent


posting of various groups of nursing students belonging to different classes
in specific nursing fields i.e., OPDs, speciality wards, OT, delivery room, clinics
community health fields-clinics etc.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN PLANNING ROTATION:

 The objectives of the course have to be clearly stated.

 Number of students in each class.

 Number and size of departments, agencies, areas, teaching units or


wards where students should be given opportunity for giving clinical
experience.

 Presence of students of other program the same field.

 The agency authority concern and consideration.

 The duration of clinical experience in each area.

 The number of persons available for clinical supervision

Indian nursing council requirements.

 Number of staff nurse employed to provide nursing services in the


hospital.

 Sectors that is solely dependent on student services during day and


night.
 Sequence of experience required.

 Select wards depending on learning experience to be provided.

 Adhere to rotation plan.

PRINCIPLES IN PLANNING CLINICAL ROTATION:

The clinical rotation plan must be in accordance with total curriculum


plan.

It must be made in advance.

Theoretical instructions should precede as closely as possible with


clinical experience simultaneously the ward teachings etc.

The teacher and student ratio will be 1:4 or as prescribed by INC.

Select the type of learning experience from simple to complex.

Clinical supervisors must be familiar with the rotation plan.

The students should be posted where they get maximum supervision


from clinical supervisors and qualified nursing staff.

Each student should get all experience on rotation wise.

Over crowding in any clinical area should avoid.

Avoid overlapping of work.

All students should enter and leave the particular clinical area at same
time and they should complete the assignments in time.

Continuity in clinical care is needed.

INDIVIDUAL ROTATION PLAN:

To make sure that each student in particular block posting undergoes


experience in each area. The individual plan is prepared by the subject
teacher in consultation with principal and faculty. The clinical supervisors
have to rotate each student into the assigned area related to a specific
course of study.

NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS IN THE CLINICAL AREA

The students need to identify the objectives for their respective clinical
area.

Facilities made available to each student for student for the practice of
good nursing.

Guidance and supervision should be provided to each student.

Assignments should be given based on level of learning acquired by each


student.

Make the students to perform the activities independently or practicing


alone.

Students must have the opportunity to work in a team.

Teacher has to observe the performance discuss and evaluate the


activities.

Provide accessibility of library or to the reference materials are


meaningful to the clinical areas of their placement.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF NURSING STAFF IN CLINICAL AREA:

 To demonstrate a high standard of patient care.

 To create an atmosphere this encourages learning.

 To assist the nursing faculty in preparation of the clinical rotation plan.

 To ensure that the student receive maximum learning experience.


 To participate in orientation programme of students.

 To make evaluation reports in connection with students’ clinical


experience.

 To guide, supervise and evaluate the students ‘performance.

 To participate and cooperate in clinical teaching programmes through


daily reporte, nursing rounds.

 To cooperate in maintaining record of practical experience.

FACULTY ROLE IN CLINICAL POSTINGS:

 The teacher has to prepare objectives for clinical experience.

 Based on objectives, clinical experience has to be planned in advance


to provide specific learning experience.

 The teachers should assess, the students should have adequate


theoretical background to benefit for clinical experience.

 To provide some topic for spot clinical teaching,& such teaching has
to be repeated to other groups also.

 Get permission from clinical authorities; place the necessary material


required for client care.

 Ensure that each student is aware of the objectives, assignments


criteria for evaluation.

 Place and guide the students to get required clinical experience.

 Orient he student to the clinical area, ward staff, policies, philosophy


of organization where they were posted.

 Participate in teaching, supervision and evaluation of students on the


wards.
 Arrange ward teachings, ward discussions, and case presentations.

 Help the students for effective charting of records and reports.

 Depend upon nature of posting evaluation methods, tools will be


offered.(e.g. performance evaluation, audit etc.)

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION:

Clinical rotation plan is very important in nursing curriculum; I discussed


definition, factors to be considered planning rotation plan. Responsibilities of
students, clinical staff & faculty in clinical postings. So after completion of
my class all will make clinical rotation plan in future. Thank you.
