MODULE IN SCIENCE 5
FIRST QUARTER/WEEK 3-4/DAY 1

Changes That Materials Undergo

Hello Kids! In this module you will study and learn to describe on how
matter may change physically or chemically operationally. Changes occur in materials
as well as the good and bad effects changes in the environment and living things.
Earlier, you learned that materials are composed of matter. Therefore, you can say that
when materials undergo change, so do the states of matter that compose them.
Different activities are provided for you to do so that you will master what changes that
materials undergo.
Your Lesson for Today

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE

Matter may change physically or chemically.

PHYSICAL CHANGE, only the form of matter changes. The substance of which it is made
remains the same. Physical change does not involve a chemical reaction. It is usually a reversible
change; that is by reversing the process; the original substance can be obtained. Therefore, no new
material is formed. The original characteristics if the substance remains the same. Cutting, tearing,
shattering, grinding, and mixing are further types of physical changes because they change the form
but not the composition of a material.

CHEMICAL CHANGE, the original substance is lost and a new substance is formed. The evidences or
signs that matter changes chemically are the evolution or production of heat (in burning), the release of
gas or bubbles ( in foul odor or decomposing organic matter), the formation of curdle precipitates
( when milk curdles), production of electrical energy ( in a battery), and production of sound energy
( in an explosion)

Children, you need to answer first the Pre-Test before going

to the other activities. Do the activities in order as they appear in this
module. Read the directions for each activity and answer them.

Give it a
try!
Direction: Identify each picture inside the box. Write PC
for physical change and CC for chemical change.

Exercise 1

Activity 1 - What Changes Do Paper Undergo?

A. Folding, Crumpling, Tearing and Burning!

Materials: piece of paper

Procedure:
1. Tear the paper into two.
2. Fold the paper into square shape.
3. Crumple the paper into balls.
4. Light the candle and slowly place the paper over the flame of the
candle. Note: Do this with your parents, or elder sibling or any relatives
older than you)
5. Record your observation using the table below.

Let’s Remember This

Physical change happens when only the size, shape or form of the material and
without changing its composition. The application of force, pressure and heat can cause a
material to undergo physical change.

Chemical change is a change that involves the transformation of a material into a

substance due to the action or presence of heat and other substances such as acid.

Physical Change
Examples:
1. melting ice 6. Breaking glass
2. cutting paper 7. Water evaporation
3. boiling water 8. Slicing cake
4. tearing cloth 9. Bending metal
5. chopping wood 10. Crumpled paper

Chemical Change
Examples:
1. burning wood 6. Burning matchstick
2. souring milk 7. Frying an egg
3. exploding fireworks 8. Burning dried leaf
4. rusting nail 9. Rotting fruits
5. baking cake 10. Frying fish
