Challenges of Global Cities
Global cities conjure up images of fast paced, exciting cosmopolitan lifestyles. But such
descriptions are lacking. Global cities also have their undersides. They can be sites of
great inequality and poverty as well as tremendous violence. It creates winners and
losers.
GLOBAL INEQUALITY
A person experiences unfairness
in terms of human rights, opportunities, and quality of life.
ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS
Rapid urbanization, which strain basic infrastructure coupled with more frequent and
extreme weather linked to global climate change. One of its reasons is the emission of
carbon in each country . The higher the carbon released the greater the pollution.
RESOURCES
The excessive growth of population contributes to a reduction of green spaces within the
cities, affecting the liveability. As fresh water becomes scarce and fertile land diminishes,
food prices may escalate, hitting the poorest hardest.
EXCESSIVE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Because of the sheer size of the population in global cities, urban area consumes most
of the global energy. Carbon emission that is created from producing electricity to power
cities are the major cause of global warming. Cities are in need to create solution in this
environmental threat.
TERRORIST THREATS
Since global cities have higher population and they symbolize globalization, they have a
very high threat of a terrorist attacks. Some terrorist groups hates globalization and
targets global cities. Some of these attacks are the September 11 attack on New York
and the terrorist attack in Paris on November 2015.
