LAS - Indeterminate Form of Limits PDF

This document contains a basic calculus learning activity sheet on evaluating limits of indeterminate forms. It provides 4 examples of evaluating various indeterminate limits using techniques like factoring, simplifying, and rationalizing expressions before taking the limit. It then provides 10 exercises for students to evaluate limits, some of which exist and some which are undefined. The answer key at the bottom provides the solutions.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

INDETERMINATE FORM OF LIMITS

𝑓(𝑥) 0
The quotient 𝑔(𝑥) is said to assume the indeterminate form, 0 at 𝑥 = 𝑎, and it is undefined
at that point. Nevertheless, the limit of the quotient exists. In the proceeding examples,
we will illustrate some tools in evaluating the limits of indeterminate form.

(𝑥+𝑎)−𝑎
Example 1. Evaluate 𝑙𝑖𝑚 𝑥
𝑥→0
( 𝑥 + 𝑎 ) − 𝑎 (0 + 𝑎 ) − 𝑎 0
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = = , 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒
𝑥→0 𝑥 0 0

Solution: If the denominator consists of a single term and approaches 0, simplify the expression
first before applying the limit theorems. In this example, we can simplify the expression by
removing the grouping symbol. Hence,
(𝑥 + 𝑎 ) − 𝑎 𝑥+𝑎−𝑎 𝑥
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 1 = 1
𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0

(𝑥−3)2−9
Example 2. Evaluate 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→0 𝑥
(𝑥 − 3 − 9 (0 − 3)2 − 9 (−3)2 − 9 9 − 9 0
)2
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = = = = , 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒
𝑥→0 𝑥 0 0 0 0

Solution: We can expand (𝑥 − 3)2 and proceed as follows:

(𝑥 − 3)2 − 9 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 9 − 9 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 𝑥(𝑥 − 6)
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥
= 𝑙𝑖𝑚 𝑥 − 6
𝑥→0
= 0 − 6 = −6

𝑥 2 −16
Example 3. Evaluate 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→4 𝑥−4

𝑥 2 − 16 42 − 16 16 − 16 0
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = = = , 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒
𝑥→4 𝑥 − 4 4−4 0 0

Solution: In this case, factor the numerator and cancel common terms to remove the zero in the
denominator. Then, apply the limit rules to the simplified expression.

𝑥 2 −16 (𝑥+4)(𝑥−4)
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 𝑥 + 4 = 4 + 4 = 8
𝑥→4 𝑥−4 𝑥→4 𝑥−4 𝑥→4

Week 2, Quarter 2
√𝑥+2−√2
Example 4. Evaluate 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→0 𝑥
Solution: First, we rationalize the numerator then evaluate the limit.
√𝑥+2+√2
Multiply the expression by , we get
√𝑥+2+√2

√𝑥 + 2 − √2 √𝑥 + 2 − √2 √𝑥 + 2 + √2 (𝑥 + 2) − 2
𝑙𝑖𝑚 = 𝑙𝑖𝑚 ( )( ) = 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→0 𝑥 𝑥→0 𝑥 √𝑥 + 2 + √2 𝑥→0 𝑥(√𝑥 + 2 + √2)

1
= 𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→0 √𝑥 + 2 + √2
1 1 √2
= =2 =
√2+√2 √2 4

Exercises: Evaluate the limit if it exists.
